9. I support them 1000% -- but
I want to make sure that the bailout-loan will really benefit the workers. I don't want a repeat of the Wall Street bailout, where the CEOs stuffed the money in their pockets and screwed the workers over.

Look at Merrill Lynch, where thousands and thousands have been laid off, with more to come, and CEO John Thain is demanding a $10,000,000 "bonus."

If we want to help the workers, part of any bailout deal should be that the companies' board of directors should have more than 50 percent representation from the workers. If the taxpayers are investing heavily in the company, they should have a majority position.

This sounds radical, but it's exactly what happens if you go to a private venture capital firm to get money for your business. They want a dominant stake.

11. You can add me in on that.
While not a Union man, nor would i work for one. I do however see the positive things that have been brought about because of them. Also largely because it has really hit me these last few weeks how much different the auto makers were treated as oppose to the financial industry.

With all the crap i saw, and the talking points i heard all pointed to one thing. The only reason they want to demonize the auto workers is because they wish to see the union done aways with. This also brought to the forefront of my thinking that very few care about us blue collar guys. We are dirt/trash to be used and thrown away.

My support lies with you guys/gals, and all the other blue collar workers. WORKERS UNITE!!!!!!

And a K&R

42. Why wouldn't you work for a union?
Any "anti-union" sentiment that I have (which is none in my personal opinion, but apparently lots according to various DUers) is due to pure jealousy. I would love to belong to a union. I would kill to have a pension and health care provided by my employer.

85. Just another set of rules.
I don't need or want another layer of people telling me what i have to do in relation to my job. Sure there are good things, but it goes along with things i don't like. I support anyone who wishes to work for a Union though, it's their right and choice. Also as mentioned i see the benifits. However it's not for me.

And for the record i know what it's like to work for a union. Several of my companies plants are in M.A. and are union. I have visited several times, and even worked at 2 of them for several weeks showing them how i run my shipping department. I like my plant as it is.

15. I come from a long line of union members and was one my self. I wish the auto workers union the best
but...the problem is so much bigger than just the auto workers. All members of the working class are suffering and need help. Special help aimed at one group isn't fruitful. We need jobs so people can buy cars. We need tariffs to protect American made goods. We don't need to give the auto corporations money, they will waste it as they have in the past. Give the money to the workers, make jobs, etc. Stop giving the banks money. Let them fail.

If the fed wants to raise revenue, it's either taxes or tariffs. I say tariffs is a better idea!

it would hurt, but it would be good for the country.
I remember in the 70's - things were more expensive back then and we survived, didn't have half the crap we have now - look at all the storage business popping up; people have too much shit.

28. They are being completely left out in the cold...
Having lived here in Michigan for 25 years I am disgusted that the MSM, the Big 3 and the union brass themselves allow these workers to be misrepresented. You're average "joe" doesn't realize that, when they say a worker makes 47 dollars an hour, they're referencing every little benefit down to personal days on top of the average wage of $18/hour.

All of these southern senators and govs. are in cahoots and would do anything to break the unions so their country-ass right to work states will get even more work for their scab labor. The labor movement built this country and we must support the unions, even if it comes to marching in the streets of DC. :kick:

they can roll logs in a river for all we care. They have been given EVERY opportunity to organize under the UAW, and have turned us down at every opportunity.

When it comes time for the very few to "retire" from the Japanese or German auto plants, let's see what kind of pension they get.

ZERO. Unless they have a 401K on $14.00 an hour.

if it is decent w/o a union, then why pay the uaw? if toyota keeps the union out by treating their workers well, then more power to them. what the hell is wrong with that? and why would you get mad at their workers? do they not have a right to compete with gm and the uaw?
and finally, what about the inept management at gm vs the management at toyota?

Of course my new duty station is in a piece of shit "right to work" state, and we have no contract. So although I am union, I have no real rights. Still, everytime my crooked in-bed-with-big-oil managers ask me to do crap that is way over into the gray zone, I get a kick out of saying "Sure, we can discuss this. I will have to call my Union Rep though. Gotta keep everything on the up and up" and watch the blood drain from their face.

but NOI executives who should go --

and not to build anything but ELECTRIC CARS --

Unions need to see changes that end corporate intimidation of

union organizing and hope that Obama is going to come thru to

help lABOR.

by the way on edit.. was it not the saddest thing in the world, when the right wingnuts and even some of the media did not get Al Gores joke about his mother singing him to sleep with "look for the union label"

We told that joke so often, my Dad used to say that (union all his life) was the first thing he looked at on his newborns feet, was the union label :)

84. With respect, saying "I support" something is not support.
"Support" is material. At best I can say I agree with the UAW, but since I am not an autoworker and don't pay union dues or provide assistance in any other way, I cannot honestly say I support the UAW.

I know I am being hypertechnical, but that is how I see it (hypertechnically).

I am not an union member (IT sucks when it comes to organized labor), but I know enough to figure out that one of the reasons why this country had a prosperous middle class was organized labor.

Besides, my grandpa, who was a veteran of both: world war II and labor struggles, made sure I learned to respect those who fought for my freedoms. And he made damn sure I understood that, wasting one's life working until death just for the "privilege" of making someone else richer, is another form of slavery. And I better damn respect those who put their lives on the line to give me the things I take for granted (even as a non-union worker): 40hr weeks and overtime, safety, retirement, benefits, and vacations to enjoy the damn fruits of my honest work.

What I think this country needs is a massive general strike (like they do in Europe) to put the few at the top on notice: there are more of us than then, and they sure as f*ck they need us more than we need them.

I am sure the average auto line worker can run a major corporation into the ground just like the Wallstreet elites do. I am not so sure the same elites could do what the average auto worker does. Sooooo where is their value proposition again?
