Somalia in turmoil. 20 killed. Soldiers set on fire by Islamic militants

NAIROBI, Kenya // In some of the bloodiest fighting in months, at least 20 people were killed yesterday in Somalia's capital. The dead included seven government soldiers, some of whose bodies were dragged through the streets and set on fire, witnesses said.

The gruesome scene was reminiscent of the 1993 crash of a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter in Mogadishu during an ill-fated mission that killed 18 American servicemen.

1. The History of
US involvement in Ethiopia/Somalia is sad and frustrating. The US at one time hated Ethiopia because it put in place a socialist government friendly to the Soviet Union. We pitted Somalia against them at that time. Ethiopia ended up putting in a US backed government and Somalia put in a gov. that disagreed with US policy so then our loyalties shifted. Notice the US never cares about human rights or famine unless they have an ulterior political motive. Back in the early 90s we heard FAMINE FAMINE FAMINE about SOmalia. Yes, there most certainly was a famine...too bad it had mostly ended a year before our press finally started covering it! We sent troops in and destroyed the fragile government that they had. For the last 10 years Somalia has been in crisis because no real government has been in place. The US has stopped any gov. from forming because the people refuse to put in a US backed puppet. SO, the people finally began to back this new Islamic gov. the people backed this new gov because they promised some form of stability, rule of law, and social services (no matter how strongly I disagree with their politics) Somalia was beginning to stabalize. The US couldn't have this, so now they are backing Ethiopa's attacks on Somalia.
