Pete Seeger needs to be head of the National Endowment for the Arts.

My partner mentioned this and I immediately warmed up to the idea.

After all i really can't thing of anyone who has done more to bring American Arts and Letters to ALL the world's people.

I tried to think of someone in the other arts or an other music person and i really can't think of anyone who is at his artistic level AND has worked for others all his life. He even beats out Bob Dylan, Aretha, and Willie Nelson and in this respect.

I also think that the choice of Seeger will also divorce American Arts FINALLY from the tyranny of the classical arts.

I never understood WHY the NEA put so much emphasis on orchestras that haven't performed a piece by an American Composer in their entire history. Still more orchestras only perform "Fanfare for a Common Man" and "Rhapsody in Blue" and nearly nothing else from any American Composers. Or they decide to perform selections from Broadway but fully ignore the 20th century composers who write for the orchestra like John Adams. I'm sure a lot of people will mention the Boston Pops and a lot of other organizations that you see on television but i am not talking about TV Groups. If you take a look at your local orchestra you will see that the repertoire is overwhelmingly material from overseas.

So other than flaming me about classical music......

What do people think about Pete Seeger as head of the NEA. Any other people who might be good choices?

1. Pete Seeger deserves....
To sit on a fluffy, plaid flannel pillow
Be brought healthy, delicious drinks
And get his feet massaged

But I get your drift. :D

2. Geed idea,...
...but I think that Pete is about 89-90. He may think it a job for a younger man.

Perhaps his friend's son, Arlo.

3. I could not agree more with the case you make ... Pete Seeger is perfect except for one thing .....
.... his age. That said, if HE thinks he's up to it, then I am all for it. Watching him today showed a man who remains remarkably vital.

4. He is an artist , not an administrator. Trying to be one might kill him

5. I'm an art school dropout
Going by the Palin Rule, that makes me more than qualified to be head of the NEA.
