South Carolina State Senator Wants to Outlaw Profanity

State Senator Robert Ford is hoping to outlaw lewd language and is pushing for a bill that would prohibit profanity.

Under the pre-filed bill, profanity could land you in jail for up to 5 years and/or cost you up to $5,000 in fines.

Which words are exactly considered profane is still unclear, but the bill does have a list of qualifications for profanity including words or actions that are lewd, vulgar or indecent in nature.

Ford is a Democrat, but Wikipedia has this to say about him:

A week before the primary election in South Carolina, Ford, an African-American and a Democrat, announced his support for United States Senator Hillary Clinton. Clinton's chief opponent, United States Senator Barack Obama won the primary by a 2-1 margin garnering more than 80% of the African-American vote. Senator Robert Ford, who notoriously dismissed Obama's chances while endorsing Clinton said that "It's a slim possibility for him to get the nomination, but then everybody else is doomed. Every Democrat running on that ticket next year would lose — because he's black and he's top of the ticket. We'd lose the House and the Senate and the governors and everything."

"I'm a gambling man. I love Obama," Ford said. "But I'm not going to kill myself."

I live in SC and apparently there are not enough police officers to ticket people for GLARING traffic offenses - I have a near miss every time I drive the 2 miles it takes me to get to work.

Who is going to enforce this thing?

The state's unemployment is going through the roof. We have a governor who is too
busy trying to consolidate power in his hands to worry about it. We have a senator
who is DeMinted and wants to lead the "freedom fighters" in the Rethug party against
socialism. That's just for starters.

As you can see from my name, I live in this feudal state. The other bill Ford received notoriety for was one to ban low-rider jeans, saying that you could be fined if your underwear showed above your pants. This guy is about 55 and was actually fairly active as a civil rights activist in his youth, but now he's just an embarrassment. He makes noises on occasion about running for Governor; maybe he thinks white voters would support him because of shit like this.

on edit: I mentioned this to a co-worker, and he reminded me that Ford has announced he plans to run for Governor in two years on a platform of bringing back vidoe poker, which was legal here for about five years until the late 90s. Maybe he actually thinks he can get Bubba to vote for a black guy.

Who would pass a law putting people in jail for 5 years for swearing? Seriously, can you imagine how full the jails would be and the cost to the state? I think the whole idea of outlawing profanity is beyond stupid but if you are going to propose such a thing, make it a more reasonable fine. 5 years or $5,000 -- yeah right.
