When Betty Ford had cancer
(and God bless her for being one of the first to go public with it) did anyone ask how Gerry was going to be able to concentrate on his job while she went through treatment? (And let's remembers, the odds for long term survival were much lower then)... I don't recall that question being asked.

1. Or when Nancy Reagan had cancer? Or when Happy Rockefeller had cancer?

Who's to say that whoever is elected won't have to face unexpected personal or family illness or accident or death?

2. The little woman

wasn't supposed to bother the Great Provider with such trivial stuff as the removal of breasts. I don't think anybody gave a second thought to the notion that a man should stop what he's doing to support his wife. Different times.

I suppose I should add the sarcasm tag, just for good measure.

:sarcasm:

3. I take your point, but Ford is not perhaps the best example.
After all, as Lyndon Johnson noted, "Gerry Ford can't fart and chew gum at the same time." I don't think many Americans believed that Ford could do his job whatever the circumstances, so his wife's cancer wouldn't detract much from an already abysmal Presidency.

6. While Ford was a nice and decent man on the outside....
...who befriended Jimmy Carter, he also sat on the Warren Commission, pardoned Nixon, represented the DeVos and Van Andel families (of Scamway fame - check out the lineage from those odious clans if you want to scare yourself), and spawned the evil twins, Rumsfeld und Cheney.

In other words, don't be deceived by outward appearances.

4. I don't recall that either.

This will be a subtle attack mode for the repukes and possibly Edwards' Dem opponents (although I certainly hope not!). Couric tonight was over the top with her negativity, and might have been the first to really get this accusation started. We will hear this from now on, especially if he climbs in the polls.

5. Katie was all doom and gloom tonight....
...the interview didn't seem very balanced to me.

10. I had not watched Katie Couric for quite a while...now I know why
She had her own agenda and kept asking the same question over and over.
I won't bother watching Couric again.

7. Katie Couric sure didn't slow down when her husband had colorectal cancer.
If Couric is going to attack the Edwards, then Couric is also fair game for people to accuse her of using her husband's death to keep herself in the limelight and promote her career.

8. I saw the interview as well
and Katie reminded me of Cruella Deville. I wanted to reach out and touch her and then tell her I understood why she's losing viewers. The should bring back bob Schieffer.

9. I was skeptical yesterday when
I heard couric was doing the interview of the Edwards..and damn if she didn't manage to turn an upbeat interview into doom and gloom. Actually, she tried but John and Elizabeth stood their ground and came away looking gracious and eloquent and couric..well, she knows a dozen ways to say "some people say you should stay away from the campaign trail".
