I think it was during the 1944 presidential campaign, when some Republican attacked Roosevelt, saying something along the lines that FDR's wartime economic policies would lead us into another Great Depression. FDR's response was priceless, a wonderful example of his stiletto wit. I can't remember the exact quote, but it was something like, "There is a lugubrious old adage that says, 'One should never utter the word 'rope' in the home of a hanged man.' Now, if I were a Republican, it seems to me the very last word I would want to use in mixed company is that word 'Depression.'"

Hearing Jindal, I thought I could just about hear FDR purring, "Now, it seems to me, if I were a Republican today, especially a Republican from Louisiana, the very last word I'd want to use in front a national audience is that word 'Katrina.'"
