Supposedly, Henry's first wife became suicidal--or more likely, suicidally depressed--and was straightjacketed and confined to a cell in the basement until she conveniently died. When Henry made his "give me liberty or give me death" speech, the story goes, he thereafter went home to spoon-feed his captive wife, without publicly noting the inconsistency. Why he didn't have one of his 75 slaves do it is a mystery to me.
