Obama Admin Won't Block AIG Bonuses Despite Tough Talk
Source: Talking Points Memo

Even as Barack Obama delivered an angry rebuke of AIG Monday and pledged to use all "legal avenues" to block millions in bonuses to the company's financial products division, the White House later said the payouts could not be blocked without an expensive legal fight that it would not undertake, the WSJ reports.

Another Obama retreat. But big talk on the TV.

to halt bonuses? Don't believe too much from the wsj.

15. couple of questions
nice observation, but he linked a left-leaning site, correct? the kicker is that i checked TPM and couldn't find his reference. i'm wrapping up lunch at work so i'm not going to search the site for it, but imagine the strategery of posting a hit-and-run piece that isn't sourced, hoping people just read a blurb and spread the word.

4. So fight the "legal fight."
That's what we have an Attorney General and a staff of hundreds for. The government owns 80% of AIG. Maybe we should just agree to let them have 20% of their bonuses.

12. It wouldn't be the feds' fight.
It would be AIG's.

Google "pyrrhic victory".

7. There's more than one way...
to bake a cake. Plenty of other CEO's were persuaded to forfeit their bonuses. Surely AIG can be persuaded to do the same. Maybe we can even get Halliburton, to give back some of their 'bonuses'?

9. I knew that Obama would find an excuse for not acting boldly
He has done a lot of talking about this. He is obviously not planning to walk the talk.
