Who, in their right mind, would want to work for the government for $1
a year only to be hauled before Congress 6 months into the job and blamed for everything that went wrong on someone else's watch? Where is Liddy's predecessor? Where were the Congressional "watchdogs" like Barney Frank when this was going down?

I don't like the bonuses but I also don't like the piano wire death threats. This is not the way to solve this mess.

3. Why single out Frank? Dems were in the minority until late 06 - and did not take
committee chairs until Jan 07. I would say that the groundwork for the collapse was laid well before that. Glass-Stegall was repealed at the end of the Clinton administration, and the SEC was put on standby when bUsH was given the keys to the white house. The republicons had majorities and committee chairs for 12 years leading up to 2006 mid terms.

They fucked everything up and handed it over to the dems in 07.

Don't blame Frank for this mess.

4. You may be right but it's just that he's so outspoken that I would
have expected him to been screeching about this well before now, minority party or not. BTW, Barney was my Congressman for years and I have always loved the guy.

5. I get the impression he's a decent enough guy who
signed on to a huge steaming mess. He didn't create this, but he's the one cleaning it up. He's showing great leadership by taking $1 a year for a salary. AIG is failing and not making a profit.

8. Look, death threats are a terrible thing and no one should
have to deal with that sort of intimidation tactic, or the fear of fruition. However, as Rep Frank clearly knows, such letters and threats are simply a part of being in the public eye. Anyone who says or does anything in the media spotlight gets a wide spectrum of responses, many of them from crazy or criminal people. As Barney said, that is what the FBI is for. I ask you this, how many death threats do you think Rep Frank, as the only openly gay member and a Democrat, has gotten over the years? My guess is far more than AIG folks will get.
People I know have had death threats because the fictional character they play got a divorce, or danced with a black woman, or wore a short skirt. For voting for Obama, for being an environmentalist, for making money, for being outspoken, for being too silent, for being wrong, for being right. It is part of the deal.
It is terrible. It causes great distress. And it is also very common for those whose work or life is in the media. It is awful, but also something folks like Barney Frank face year after year, without stealing from anyone.
They have the money, let them hire security, like anyone else who feels a threat from the public does. That is reality. A sad reality, but it is reality.
