65 House Democrats oppose "assault weapons ban" in letter to Holder.
The Brady Campaign must be in a bit of panic right about now.

Today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, 65 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR), expressed their opposition to the reinstatement of the failed 1994 ban on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines. These congressmen cited numerous studies that proved the 1994 ban was ineffective, and they strongly urged Attorney General Holder to stop his effort and instead focus on the enforcement of existing gun laws.

NRA would like to thank Congressman Ross for his leadership on this effort. We will continue to work with Members of Congress from both parties on this important issue.

Would be nice to see at least 35 more names added to that letter.

9. Really?
You might want to inform the current 9 SCOTUS justices of that.

11. Under CA law, all men 18-45 are in the militia, see law below.
Military and Veterans Code

"122. The militia of the State consists of all able-bodied male
citizens and all other able-bodied males who have declared their
intention to become citizens of the United States, who are between
the ages of eighteen and forty-five, and who are residents of the
State, and of such other persons as may upon their own application be
enlisted or commissioned therein pursuant to the provisions of this
division, subject, however, to such exemptions as now exist or may be
hereafter created by the laws of the United States or of this State."

As others have pointed out 10 USC 311 says men 17-45 are in the militia and one state says all citizens 17-64.

Have a good day and please tell your male friends 17-45 they are in the militia. :hi:

13. Ok. But in whose world?
Edited on Thu Mar-19-09 11:20 AM by jmg257
Certainly we do here in this country in the real world.

We the people have many rights, the right to arms is only one of them, and one of only a few specifically enumerated in the Bill of Rights/Constitution.

12. What you need to do is stop drinking gun-grabber kool-aid and accept the simple fact we law-abiding
citizens have the natural, inherent, inalienable/unalienable right to keep and bear arms for self defense and that right is protected by the Second Amendment as confirmed by SCOTUS in D.C. v. Heller.

7. When will Obama bow to the inevitable and tell voters, "I will veto any bill that renews the assault
weapons ban and I've removed from the White House web site the statement that offends over 80 million gun owners, i.e. Obama and Biden 'support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent'"

8. I thought we had resolved this issue in the campaign.
Among rank and file Democratic and Republican Voters owning a gun
(through their eyes) is one of the most sacred rites.

Secondly, timing in politics is everything. Sometimes I think
we are politically tone deaf.

With the country in a frenzy over Economic Situation and Wall Street,
should we add fuel to the fire and give the RW the opening to
do their "Democrats will take your guns" number.

I realize the Assault Weapons Ban is very important to some and
I do respect that. However, timing can kill an entire party.

Just a thought.

20. No republicans signed it. All of the signers are democrats.

The letter's intent is to send a clear message to the WH and other dems that even though there is a heavy Dem majority right now, there are still enough democrats in the House opposed to the AWB that, for now, any attempt to revive it is doomed.

good news indeed.

23. It is about time. I am so tired of Democrats supporting
ineffective gun bans. I read recently that Holder was going to quit pushing for a reinstatement of the "Assault" weapons ban and instead put more money into enforcement. Updating the technology used for insta check and supporting an increase in law enforcement support funds to states would be good places to start.
