"Retarded" means slowed down. People described as mildly to moderately retarded can learn everything normal folks learn, given enough time. Remember, it was first used as a euphemism for "stupid."

Anybody who gets offended by that particular word needs to get a grip, get an education, consider becoming a hermit to avoid being offended ever again.

since I 100% agree with the spirit of what you are saying, but just want to address a small point: My daughter has a developmental disability, and while “developmentally disabled” is often used in place of “mentally retarded,” it doesn’t actually mean that. I mean, it’s true that many (most?) people with developmental disabilities also have “intellectual disabilities” (my daughter’s preferred terminology, as she used to represent people with developmental disabilities in our state, as Chair of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities)…. but there are some developmental disabilities, like cerebral palsy (my daughter’s disability) that are not always associated with intellectual disabilities. (With cerebral palsy, for example, you could have an intellectual disability… or you could be mentally gifted.)

Because my daughter also has a speech disability, she has faced the (erroneous) stereotype that she’s intellectually disabled her whole life, and that has given her a large measure of empathy for people who actually have intellectual disabilities, as they are among the most stigmatized people everywhere in the world (including within the disability community, itself, at times). They experience exclusion, shunning, institutionalization (in often horrific conditions), euthanasia, ridicule, low expectations, limited opportunities…and much more.

My daughter faced painful teasing in middle school, with kids calling her “retard”… and worse. What is PC about asking people to consider the historical implications of certain terms, and to try to avoid inflicting pain? Is the N-word acceptable? (Well, judging by the way I’ve heard some kids using it, maybe so… but still difficult for me to hear….)
