Senate Judiciary Committee votes on same sex marriage bill

The Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee has unanimously recommended authorizing civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

Before that vote, the committee defeated an amendment that would have delayed action until after a statewide non-binding referendum next March.

Supporters of same-sex marriage say it shouldn't be decided by popular vote.

The bill now goes to the full Senate. If it becomes law, civil marriages for same-sex couples could begin September

2. There's virtually no doubt about it passing. It's kind of a fait accomplis
now ask me what our repuke gov will do, and I'll tell you that though he hasn't said he'll veto it, he has said that civil unions go far enough. Some folks here think he'll just let it go through. I don't. I think Governor DoLess will veto it. Then it's a matter of will the legislature be able to override the veto. I don't know.
