I got a group e-mail from someone urging me to sign a petition protesting this legislation; when I clicked on the provided link to check it out, I read this:
"We, the people, of the United States of America demand that H.R. 1388 "The GIVE Act" be voted against by all officials elected to represent us. H.R. 1388 "The GIVE Act" is in direct violation of our Constitutional Rights as American citizens. Requiring mandatory volunteerism of United States citizens is a form of slavery and will not be tolerated. We, the people, of The United States of America collectively object to any reauthorization or reformation of the national service laws."
A quick Google search shows that, among other things, the Act was passed two days ago. I thought it seemed entirely reasonable, and I don't get the whole slavery accusation. Its full text runs to hundreds of pages, so I haven't read the entire thing; most of the Google returns about it seem to be from Free Republic-type sites. What the hell is it about this bill that's so outrageously offensive?? Thanks!
