“Officer hit in face, taunted, police say” (Modesto CA) Is there more to come?
“Officer hit in face, taunted, police say”, The Modesto Bee.
The hostile crowd that confronted a lone Modesto police officer and his police dog early Sunday threw glass bottles at the officer, and one suspect punched him in the face, according to details released by Modesto police Tuesday.

The officer happened upon the crowd while responding to a report of a stolen car. The officer stopped when he saw a group attacking one man. When he tried to break up the fight, the crowd turned on him, police say. One man challenged the officer to a fight. When the officer tried to arrest the man, some people pulled the man out of the officer's control, said Findlen. Three suspects were charged with "lynching," a term for removing a suspect from police custody.

The woman didn't want her name used because she worries about retaliation from gang members. She said that's the reason some people didn't call 911 on Sunday — out of fear of the gangs, not hostility toward police.

Another woman who lives nearby said she keeps her house stocked with homemade weapons, including a length of metal pipe stowed in a closet. She said her front door has been broken three times by people trying to break in. She's the single mother of a toddler. She said she knows she can call the police if she needs help, but if they don't make it in time, she said, she wants to be able to protect her family.

When attacked by a criminal and seconds count, police are only minutes away

Perhaps Chicago’s Edward G. Gardner was correct in asking Obama to send Federal troops, see DU thread “Federal troops to quell urban violence? Black on Black Love founder asks Obama to send help”

1. Our local sheriff told me "We can't protect you"
When I confronted him at a budget hearing where he was trying to get more officers he told me there was no cost effective way to provide regular patrols in the isolated area where we live. The sheriff's office is 25 miles away.

I had another clash with the sheriff when I tried to deal with a burglar a month or so later but that's another story.

I hate to say it but folks you are on your own. The police can't stop you from getting shot. As you can see they have their hands full keeping themselves from getting shot.

2. Law enforcement
Is really all they can try to do their real job is to be historians, they write a history of the crime.. You are and almost always have been realistically on your own... Although I do not know if this is true or not I have been told many times that The supreme court has actually ruled that they have no duty to protect anyone.

3. Why should the poor working masses need guns? SCOTUS said in
CASTLE ROCK v. GONZALES, “Respondent did not, for Due Process Clause purposes, have a property interest in police enforcement of the restraining order against her husband”.

Justice Stevens said in dissent “Respondent certainly could have entered into a contract with a private security firm, obligating the firm to provide protection to respondent’s family”.

Gun-grabbers must agree with Stevens, If poor people need protection, let them hire Blackwater Mercenaries.

4. In large part the police have brought this on themselves
The militarization of the police has fostered an us vs them mentality and in the poor inner city neighborhoods they are viewed as just another rival gang.

5. For the most part
Of my life I have always looked upon law enforcement as "just doing their jobs" But over the years through a few contacts with them (stopped for speeding a couple of times)and one for no front license plate, the attitude I have encountered has been pretty bad. One in Cal. actually asked me "what are you doing in California" as if I needed a reason to be there. I live in a rural area , we see a sheriffs patrol maybe once every couple of weeks, I have been told many times when talking to them that we are pretty much on our own out here, the few times I have called about anything they never even showed up. So my attitude towards them has changed considerably, I have CW permit and do carry at all times, even while at home. I am a law abiding person and will cooperate as much as possible when asked to do so in a reasonable manner but the days of giving them the same respect as I used to are long gone.

7. This is exactly right.
Swat uniforms alone make them look like an occupying force...
