Microsoft wants more H1-B workers.
" Software maker Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), which announced plans to lay off 5,000 U.S. employees earlier this year, said it needs to import more H-1B visa workers into the country to cope with what it says is a shortage of American tech workers.

"The future success of Microsoft and every other U.S. technology company depends on our ability to recruit the world's best talent," wrote Brad Smith, general counsel at Microsoft, in a blog post."

MSFT could help themselves reach a broader employment market by increasing their geographical reach in the USA. Not everybody wants to move to Redmond, WA.

17. Of course, the surviving workers are swamped!
Layoff and don't bother to offshore, just defeat labor by importing workers. This is what sparked the union movement. See the movie, Matewan. It's excellent, a must see.

18. So the 5000 people laid off were done so because they aren't talented, yes...
Where's the "bullshit" smilie where the little bull keeps plopping patties?

Given the quality of VISTA and that OFFICE 2007 is just a pretty layer (minus some features from 2003) on top of the spaghetti, I'm hard pressed to believe it's about "top talent". Not by a long damn shot. Not anymore.

20. Microsoft simply can't be competitive with American workers! They'll lose all their market share
to foreign competitors!

Never mind that their only competition are the American company Apple and the bevy of open-source programmers.

Once I am professionally successful, then I'll migrate.

32. I'm using virtualbox and running Photoshop in a stripped down XP session.
99% usable. Some effects rendering is slower, but it is NOT unusable at all.

WINE works with CS2, but CS4 is worth the upgrade so I'm sticking with virtualbox. (which is faster than vmware :( )

Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 09:04 PM by fascisthunter
the only reason they get away with selling shit, is because they have long ago cornered the market. If you can't employ Americans, get the fuck out!

33. Time for Congress to investigate the harm done by Microsoft's MONOPOLY....
And it's asinine claim that it cannot find good employees when unemployment has been sky-rocketing for Americans.

Microsoft does not pass the BULLSHIT test, and it's time for Congress to wake up about it.
