The Dallas police officer in the Ryan Moats traffic stop case has resigned
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 12:10 PM by RB TexLa
Don't worry another department will have him back in uniform next week. You know all the other cops were laughing at the video every time it played.

Powell Resigns From Dallas Police Department

"With a heavy heart and great sadness, I resigned from the Dallas Police Department this morning.

I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers, and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward.

I still hope to speak with the Moats family to personally express my deep regret, sympathy, and to apologize for my poor judgment and unprofessional conduct.

I also want to apologize to my fellow officers. I have sincere respect and admiration for the men and women of the Dallas Police Department and the work they perform daily, and I wish them well."

1. I really don't think he had a choice.
I was going over the speed limit yesterday in Dallas (which is very unlike me) but had been caught in traffic and was running a little late. Anyway...I told my daughter if we got stopped, to say she was in labor and we were on the way to the hospital--there probably wasn't a cop in Dallas who would ticket us after that fiasco.:D

2. Are you serious? Yes they would ticket you after that, trust me they would not care even if she was
in labor.

4. I'm just very, very polite and respectful to them...
I'm just very, very polite and respectful to them-- it's worked every time I've been pulled over by DPD.

3. Just because one cop made a mistake
is really not exactly an excuse for 1) speeding; and 2) lying. I don't think I'd want to be a cop. For every one that made a mistake, dozens of cops making honest traffic stops probably have to take heat for it.

I don't mean this as pro-cop. A lot of them have anger and control issues. There's many stories about that in our area, too. But I really, really detest speeding.

I detest speeding too--I was going maybe 5 over the speed limit--60 in a 55 and as I said--something I never do. In fact--I have never received a speeding ticket in over 30 years of driving--much of it long distance.
We were on the way to a Dr appt...and I figured the :D that I put at the end of my post would let folks know I was joking.
I guess there are no more people with a sense of humor these days.

9. Okay, sorry then.
I don't think 5 mph over the speed limit is that bad, really, either - as long as you weren't tailgating!!!!
