The Obamas got their dog!!
While visiting the Queen and Prince Phillip, the Obamas became acquainted with the royal corgies. Michelle decided allergies or no, the girls are getting a Welsh Corgi when the G-20 is over.

10. I have a friend who breeds them.
Not some puppy mill...she's small-scale, champion bloodlines only and she screens her buyers.

The fact that she's my friend is the ONLY reason I won't publicly agree with your post...

..."like clowns"...love it!

36. Thanks--that's my wirehaired dachshund pup--same as your smooth, except
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 09:14 PM by TwilightGardener
with a beard-and-eyebrow disguise. I had a smooth hair that died about six months ago, and couldn't bear to replace him with another smooth for the time being, didn't want to care for a long-haired dachshund, so went with the wirehair from a breeder. They're hard to find, but they're every bit as much of a dachshund (and AKC-recognized) as the smooths/longhairs. His name is Floyd. Your pup is a cutie, too, BTW!

40. Wirehaired are great!
I was surprised at how soft the coat is -- it doesn't look like it would be. Sorry to hear about your other pup. :grouphug:

BTW, is your doxie a burrower? Mine insist on being under the covers at night. I just wish they'd leave me some room!

45. Thanks, about my dearly departed ween. He was a wonderful boy--
and an obnoxious burrower. He always slept under the blankets--and if he had no blanket handy, then he'd drag sheets, towels, shirts, whatever, out of laundry baskets to cover himself with. My current wiener enjoys digging, but I think his coat is too warm to burrow--he is not a blanket-hound like the smooth was. He was only 5 months in that pic--he's eight months now, and looking a little shaggier, but his coat is still softer than I had expected as well.

11. When my wiener runs, his ears flap in the breeze like wings.
And just because doxies have short legs, doesn't mean they can't run fast! Maybe the Obamas should get a wiener. That would be totally cool!

57. You could toss that ball for a long time. Those dogs have unbelieveable stamina!
Friend had one and we would hike & 'boulder'. Dog would keep up and REFUSE to go around any obstacle! She would keep trying until she overcame the biggest rock or fallen tree.

People near me now raise them as working cattle/sheep herders. This is Montana. Terrain is rough, weather is rougher. The dogs keep up with men on horses all day. Amazing animals and have good nature, bright as all get out and, yes, clowns. Hey, humor takes a highly developed intellect! These are GREAT dogs!

27. Try living next to a pair of viszlas
Many years ago we were cursed with an asshole neighbor two doors down who owned a pair of viszlas -- gigantic Hungarian hunting hounds. They had lung capacities that would put opera stars to shame, and they barked as many as 10 hours at a time nonstop. In stereo.

At the time I had a newborn baby and a toddler. I was up half the night with them, and we needed our naps desperately. We couldn't afford air conditioning, so in order to get any air on hot days, I needed to open a window or two. Even with the windows closed, the viszlas sounded like a pack of hounds from Hell, but with an open window, it was beyond description. Everyone else in the neighborhood was out working, but I was home on maternity leave.

We tried talking to the owner nicely, but he told us to get off his front steps and get lost. Then I called the police, who told me I had to sign a complaint against the owner. Finally I took him to municipal court. Baby and toddler in my arms, I told the judge how desperate I was to get some sleep for the 3 of us. (The dogs would often bark until 10 at night, in addition to all day.) The judge fined the guy $25 and told him to make the dogs shut up.

However it kept happening. I ended up taking the guy to court two more times. The 3rd time, the judge said the owner had to do something or face jail time, and fined him $250 per dog. That ended it at last.

There's a dog in my neighborhood that barks at nothing and sets off my wieners. It's annoying -- but at least it doesn't happen at night.

I fucking hate Beagles. Not only are they stupid as fuck, but they make godawful noises.

My neighbor breeds Shiba Inus. They sound like a rabid raccoon getting murdered, but they don't make noise often.

I know my doxies are susceptible to back problems also. We're supposed to be watching their weight. Right. Try to get a doxie to eat less. I give them carrots and snap peas instead of dog treats. At least they're easy to fool!

54. Yep, dogs with long backs and short legs are prone to back problems.
And OMG, I know what you mean about watching their weight. Thankfully Corky loves carrots but I've never tried snap peas. Thank you. I'll give them a try.

I swear, Corky consumes more calories by knowing exactly where to be when folks might drop food. If something falls off the table it goes right into his mouth. Same with cooking around the stove. Or if somebody is eating in the family room, heaven forbid they get up and leave their plate unguarded. He can snag a steak and baked potato and have it all gone in 2 seconds flat.
