The Rachel Maddow's show is on a 6 month delcine in TV viewership

From Media Bistro:

As we reported yesterday, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show is up 98% in Total Viewers and 70% in the A25-54 demo compared to the show that occupied the time slot in March '08. Maddow was an instant hit and is currently the network's second-highest rated show. But March '09, Maddow's sixth full month on the air, was also the show's lowest rated. The chart below shows the trend.

Why is the Rachel Maddow show losing steam?

1. what the heck is a media bistro? Never heard of it.
Wait - don't tell me. It's a restaurant that serves up TV Guides?

3. Well, for one thing she opened up during the election season
A top time for any politically oriented show to make hay. Furthermore, there is no longer a Bush in the White House, so she and other left leaning commentators don't have an easy, obvious target to go after. In fact her show has become something of cheerleading section for the Obama administration.

Finally, I think that people are just trying to tune it all out any more. Everywhere you turn, radio, TV, newspaper, all the news is bad and people have just gotten sick of it. I know I have, and I rarely watch either Olberman or Maddow anymore. In fact about the only "news" I turn the TV on for anymore is the local news (gotta catch the weather) and The Daily Show. The rest of it, I really don't need.

18. Maybe, maybe not,
Granted, like I said above, I have been watching her less and less. Yet it seems as though every time I do turn her show on, it seems as though she is cheerleading the current administration:shrug:

20. well then take my word for it. I watch every chance I get.
And what you said was WAY inaccurate. Just so you know. She's honest and calls out what's wrong no matter who it is.

Easy to verify: watch more often.....?

I can't imagine what would be more watchable than Rachel's show at 9. Is Colbert on then? It's good stuff, but I'll take Rachel any day. Matter of taste I guess.

24. Of course you haven't been watching her program
Or you wouldn't assume her show is a "cheer leading section for the Obama administration". She has been taking Obama to task and critiquing his stance since he took office. Rachel's program is the only 'news' program I must see because she doesn't cut anyone any slack.

4. The graph shown does not indicate the headline
The first two month (during the election) show initial high numbers, the next four months show a drop off, but if you simply
graph those four months, you cannot say that the show is in decline. In fact, it is holding steady at the approximate average
of those four months.

So... I don't think it is losing steam. It found a base and is holding it.

13. That's been my problem with Rachel's show as well.
Now that the 2008 elections are over, she needs to broaden her program. Her shift to "what's Obama doing wrong" (even if coming from the left) isn't getting any traction. Plenty of others are much better at doing that. She needs to have a couple of really intelligent regular contributors to bounce issues off of...like Katrina Vanden Heuvel or Paul Begala. But, yes, I've noticed that drop-off of interest.

8. Because by nine-o-clock people are tired of political/news talk?
Perhaps they want to be entertained at that hour.

I like Rachel, but after Olbermann, I'm ready to watch something else. Discovery, History, something on the networks, anything.

9. She - and Keith - Need to get off a certain topic
I know that Gitmo and toture are important things. BUT right now, point blank, the American people do not give a rat's ass about this stuff. They are scared economically. When either of them bring up the latest "gasp" on the subject, I flip open a magazine and read. A little of it is okay. But they have to stop doing major parts of the shows with Jonathan Turley and the rights of these guys. People are not staying awake at nights wondering about the rights of these people...sorry, but that's the truth.

11. Remember late in the primaries?
When it was mathematically over but not formally?

We kept getting stories about how the "pro-Obama sexist" blogs (those who could do math) were suffering from few visits? And it all turned out to be bullshit?

KO and Rachel are the only shows I watch in my measly little time allotment for TV.

'cause everything built up to a fever pitch leading up to the election, then went back to normal? Why pick on Rachel?

No reflection on her or the show itself. I'm just personally less interested in the minutiae of politics.

19. Latest available numbers:
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 06:32 PM by UnrepentantUnitarian
On Monday, Larry King had higher ratings in the 25 to 54 demographic....yes, that Larry King. On the bright side, she beat Lou Dobbs;

Edit: If you really want to be sick, look at Glenn Beck's numbers. He's found his place on lemming television.

23. King beat Maddow on Monday

But the two shows have gone back and forth in recent weeks. We need to remember that Maddows show is still doing very well. And MSNBC finished ahead of CNN for the month of March. I just find it odd that it was also the worst month (ratings wise) for the her show.
