Frederic Gaynor, 1935-2009: Model for Daisy air rifle ads
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-gaynor_obitapr01,0,577595.story

WASHINGTON — As a youngster, Frederic Gaynor was the rosy-cheeked boy in rolled-up jeans cradling the popular Daisy air rifle. His all-American image in advertisements on the back covers of Boys' Life magazine, comic books and other publications helped make the rifle a staple on the Christmas lists of countless Baby Boomers in the 1950s.

Mr. Gaynor, who became a Foreign Service officer, died of cancer Sunday at his home in Sarasota, Fla. He was 73 and a former resident of suburban Arlington, Va.

The Daisy ad was created in 1947 for the cover of the company's annual report. Mr. Gaynor's all-American image was so well received that Daisy began using it to illustrate its "American Boys Bill of Rights" (including "the right to learn to shoot safely").

5. Here's Freddie, along with "The American Boys Bill of Rights"

In addition to the Inalienable Rights to Shoot Indians, Join the Minutemen, and Shoot Safely, American Boys all have the rights to a Pictures of Freddie for Room Walls, a Daisy Handbook, and Big Bargain Specials!

Yup, that's our American Bill of Rights! Freedom isn't Free.

6. We still live with industry public relations tricks
The oil and natural gas industry have a smooth commercial that runs all the time

Shows like "Ax men" (now another one one Discovery "American Logger") and "Deadliest Catch" (which I am a fan) are at least partly maneuvers by those industries to humanize them and make the price you pay for tolerable. Alaskan King Crab is expensive and it should be but in seeing the price everyone EVERYONE now thinks about the guys on the boat and feel a soft warm spot for buying it.
