State of Pride for Izzo. A great read about our despair.

Snip< “I embody the state,” he said Tuesday. “I’m from here.”

Snip < When things were good in America, Michigan suffered a “one-state recession.” Now that there’s a 50-state one, well, it’s 12 percent unemployment state-wide, a catastrophic 22.5 percent in the City of Detroit.

Snip < Then last summer the price of crude goes through the roof for no physically tangible reason. It’s not like the world was out of oil. It’s not like it became more expensive to draw from the earth. It was all the market. Global oil speculators went crazy. Gas went to $4 a gallon. Everyone cut back on buying trucks. Not because the trucks aren’t great, but because of an out of control financial market.

My friend gets laid off, just like that.

My two cents. Even if you don't like Basketball, root for the Spartans. We all need a good story here in Michigan, a good diversion, even if it only lasts a few days.

Sparty ON.

3. Fuggin A I'm rooting for Sparty
I just hope they get to beat Billy Bob and his upstart team full of McDonalds All-Americans. Thanks to Billy Bob, I'll even be cheering for a Big East team in the semi's.

Izzo is a hell of a coach, I just wish he would take a job in another conference (not really).

4. GO GREEN!!!!!
Even though I am an alumna from both MSU and UConn, my heart and loyalty will always be with the Spartans. Isso is right, the State of Michigan is in desperate need of a good story.

5. I had to take a 20 dollar cab ride to get from the Detroit train station to the airport
Maybe the reason Michigan's so impoverished is that progressive things like mass transit are an alien concept up there.

6. There may be some truth to that
The state went into a tailspin after Engler ripped the heart out of it in the name of right wing "fiscal responsibility". Drain the state of public services likely to attract new industries, get yourself so firmly attached to the one dying industry that's already firmly planted in your state that you will die with it.

But largely the state suffers from its own success (and capitalism's failures). For decades it had one industry, the industry, that dominated America. It thrived on that one industry. And now that industry is on the verge of disappearing because of the destructive games of capitalists.

7. It has everything to do with Taxes. Companies don't leave here for China they leave here for
Southern States who offer cheaper and better tax breaks.
