The Queen In Her Parlor, After the Party....
So the Queen and Prince Philip are sitting with rather strong adult beverages along with grandson Harry, Prince Charles and Camilla. Princess Anne is expected shortly. They are reviewing and enjoying the entire and flawless production that was the G-20. Young Harry, next to Grandma is expounding how exceptionally cool the IPod is and is checking the videos and music and showing her how you push this and that. Harry thinks he might add some of the local lads to the selections and Queen removes the pod from his hands and gives him a "look." "Nonsense", says she.

Charles cannot get over how tall these people are, how exceptional Michelle is, especially being environmentally astute and getting that garden going right there at the White House. "Damned good show I'd say." The Queen reminds him that Mrs. Roosevelt did the same thing during WWII, while she of course, was working maintenance on the Brit Army motor pool. Philip takes a sip and mutters what a bloody beautiful specimen that girl is, the Queen gives him the "look" and notes she is a delightful creature and must be referred to as First Lady Michelle. The Queen also reiterates her hopes that they will stay in touch as she suggested. Charles and Camilla both agree with the Obama delightfulness and again, Charles is just too pleased with their "green" outlook and is going to send the First Lady some good information on fertilizer (the non-toxic kind of course). Camilla decides she must now diet, she has been inspired by First Lady's wonderful wardrobe. Queen E and Philip take large sips, exchange a glance and look downward smiling.

Princess Anne has finally arrived and announces she is damned bloody glad this faulderal is over with and traffic will get back to normal and gawd, where's the drink?

The Queen is quite content, sitting in her parlor. By george, London showed the world they can put on a party with the best of them, and didn't their Prime Minister and his wife do a top notch job and all that. Yes, all very satisfactory and the Queen is very pleased.

2. Clearly you didn't hear Hitchens on the 'touching'
He suggested that Phillip my dear hasn't touched her in decades.

There is a classic calypso written by The Mighty Sparrow a few decades ago - Phillip my Dear' - a fabulous take on the man who literally walked in the palace. It was known as 'a man in my bedroom'. Can't find it on UTube but I'll find it and post it - out of this world for the play on words.

3. Years ago, after some guy broke into the palace and talked to the queen for a bit in her bedroom
there was a joke. "The Queen had another prowler break into her room tonight.... but they decided not to charge Prince Phillip with anything."

28. From The Smith's "The Queen is Dead"
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

8. You must read Sue Townsend's "The Queen and I." The Windsors have...
to go live in the projects. Liz comes off quite well, actually.

12. My grandmother was born in England but raised in Ireland. She lived
with us when I was very young during WWII and kept up on everything via the Atwater Kent. The Queen Mum of course was her fav, but much admiration for the "Princesses", especially Elizabeth Rose (?) as she would be the Queen someday. Grandmom was upset when she went into the Army but then very proud when she gained high marks for her prowess with maintenance in the motor pool....LOL.

15. Seeing the films of Liz's dad watching her work on a truck engine, it's clear...
he's just delighted. He had an ear-to-ear grin over her prowess.

Dad was born in Brighton, mum's dad in Liverpool.

Go Reds!

14. Elizabeth II is a feisty lady....What we see of her today...was her duty..
Edited on Thu Apr-02-09 07:04 PM by KoKo
she was along with "Rosy the Riveter" one of those WWII women who wanted to contribute and who lead the charge for women in the workforce.

She's an incredible person...who did chose to honor her dour role in history. Her sister Margaret had "all the fun" but died from having "too much fun."

The Queen...is a very interesting person for those who would study Women in history from the early 20th Century through today. HOW WE'VE CHANGED...but in many ways...she was never allowed to. So that's why she spends so much time in Scotland....where she can Roam the Hills as a FREE WOMAN...

18. She Was A Mechanic
During world War II. Repaired ambulances! The royals are also politically liberal believe it or not, and for all the derision Charles has had to undergo, everything he has supported is right in sync now, environment, "green" energy, toxic free agriculture etc.

20. It is. I was being silly thinking how glad those people who were
responsible for making sure the details were taken care of, people were where they were supposed to be, etc. I'd love to know what "backstage horrors" happened i.e. in the kitchen at the G-20 dinner, or looking for Harper when he missed the photo shoot...LOL.

27. There was actually a series on PBS
I think it was called "Inside the Royals" - or something like that. And, it was on what it takes to pull off an appearance by the Queen, or a lower member of the house of Royals. Particularly, state occasions.

It was definitely interesting. Those things are timed out to the exact friggen second by the 'behind the scenes' personnel. And then, they are practiced, with contingency plans for 'whatever may go wrong'.

It was a very interesting look into the complexities of pulling off a royal appearance. Actually, I think it would probably qualify as a lesson in how any state occasion would be handled in any country. Only these people do it EVERY day, not just for infrequent occasions.
