Phoenix police raid home of blogger whose writing is highly critical of them

April 2nd, 2009 · 41 Comments

Carlos Miller
In what should send a frightening chill down the spine of every blogger, writer, journalist and First Amendment advocate in the United States, Phoenix police raided the home of a blogger who has been highly critical of the department.

Jeff Pataky, who runs Bad Phoenix Cops, said the officers confiscated three computers, routers, modems, hard drives, memory cards and everything necessary to continue blogging.

The 41-year-old software engineer said they also confiscated numerous personal files and documents relating to a pending lawsuit he has against the department alleging harassment - which he says makes it obvious the raid was an act of retaliation.

Maricopa County Judge Gary Donahoe signed the search warrant that allowed at least ten cops to raid his home in North Phoenix on March 12 while handcuffing his female roommate for three hours as they tore the place apart.

Otherwise I would've posted it myself. Thanks for bringing it up Mari, it's an interesting story.

Everyone should read this and be wary of what can happen when the state abuses its power. I respect the police immensely, but it's frightening when some fascist sorts (who often seem to be attracted to law enforcement) try to put themselves above the law.

9. With plenty of help from the local prosecutor and a "friendly" judge.
Terrifying - if they get away with it.

The involved parties need to lose their jobs and at least two law licenses.

16. Why do you respect the police immensely?
It would be great to hear from someone like yourself who has that response during this time period where people are showing video of murder and abuse when citizens are in their presense. Granted it is not widely known about the amount of abuse that is actually taken place because it is done without record, but is going on.

7. Joke Arpaio has now officially crossed the line
Well, he crossed it a long time ago, but now he's in deep shit. We need to stand up against this kind of shit. That fat Nazi bastard needs to be wearing his own prison stripes.

10. Hmm...good point.
However, given that they are in the same county, I'm willing to be they share many things is common. After all, everybody that the Phoenix police arrest are going to end up in Sheriff Joke's jails anyways.

Yuma sure does.

13. Here's a list of all jails in the Phoenix area
Edited on Thu Apr-02-09 11:50 PM by Downtown Hound
They're all under Sheriff Joke's tyrannical control. All inmates wear black and white striped uniforms and pink underwear and whatever else the backwards ass sheriff can come up with.

14. If they have the words "To protect and serve" on their equipment...
The state of Arizona needs to pass a law requiring that "To protect and serve" is taken off all MCSO and Phoenix police vehicles, and instead the slogan "To punish and enslave" is put on instead.

17. I used to live in Phoenix --
-- and the last time I visited, the local WestWorld had a story about a justice activist imprisoned by Joe on an absurdly false charge, who was then murdered in one of the tent cities, no investigation, no nothing. Just murdered.

Good 'ol timey family values. I left long ago, and it gives me the creeps to go back.

I feel sorry for the friends I left behind. What a war zone.

18. Hey, wait a minute...
He has a lawsuit pending against the department for harassment, and they raided his house, took his personal files and computer equipment? Didn't they just prove his case for him? Aren't there some civil rights violations here as well?

I'm appalled.
