Blagojevich Tried To Extort Rahm Emanuel: Lawyers
Blagojevich Tried To Extort Rahm Emanuel: Lawyers

AP | MIKE ROBINSON | April 2, 2009 at 10:44 PM

President Barack Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, was the congressman targeted by an alleged extortion plan described in the indictment against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, according to attorneys familiar with the case.

At the time, in 2006, Emanuel was the congressman from the 5th District on Chicago's North Side. The attorneys spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the congressman isn't named and the information is secret grand jury material.

The indictment says the congressman sought a $2 million grant for a school. But Blagojevich allegedly told a lobbyist to tell the lawmaker his brother would have to raise campaign funds or the grant wouldn't go through.

Some of the funds were later released, even though no fundraiser had been held.

The White House declined to comment on the indictment.

1. Blago Extorted Everyone...
The local political reporters were mentioning that a lot of names will come forward...of both parites. Rod the Mod was on "pay for play" 24/7, but that was the way of the world in Springfield. I suspect we'll hear many names when this case goes to trial...and anyone who is named is gonna pay a price even if they didn't play Blago's game.

If I were Roland Burris, I'd be enjoying my new digs in DC, the storm clouds will get darker and darker whenever he returns here.

4. Sounds like it's going to be a real circus.
Kind of too bad; Blago deserves this, but I don't think the country does, or Illinoisans, for that matter.

5. We're Used To It
Blago should be convicted just about the time George Ryan comes up for parole. Springfield was the meeting place of the machine politicians of Chicago and the rushpublican machines that operated predominately in the Chicago suburbs. Maybe it was the remoteness of Springfield (250 miles from Chicago)...or something in the water, but corruption has been an ongoing fiasco there for all of my life. Blago is a product of that system...probably still feels he played a game many others and either is "innocent" cause all he was doing was what others did (business as usual) or that he was somehow being singled out as one bad fish in a polluted ocean.

Yes, this trial will be highly entertaining. The best part is when his phone calls are released. Ya know Tweety is getting a woody right now dreaming about what he's gonna hear.

:hi:
