Ok fine so you can compare her to Jackie Kennedy. Would you have made the same comparison if it was the wife of ayoung Republican President?

1. The republicans have never had a COOL first lady
They are always stuffy and super conservative even in their fashions.

3. huh?
doesn't that depend on that woman? And personally, I think comparing her to Jack Kennedy is a little silly.

What's your obsession with this about, anyway? Got any comments that rise above the superficial?

4. No and we don't have to. This is DU and we are bias and frickin' proud of it.
And there is not one damn thing you can do about it. No amount of your trolling can change that. Get over it.

6. No.
Because it is doubtful the wife of a young Republican President would have the grace and compassion our current First Lady has. I would bet big bucks in Vegas on that. Republican politicians wives are...cold and tend to be unsympathetic characters.

7. Name one wife of a young Rushican
who is in this league? Just one. She must be compassionate, intelligent, articulate, understand issues, have great looks and a fabulous body and look good in clothes that don't cost gazillions.

I think that disqualifies all of them. Give it a try.
Michelle Obama is not Jackie Kennedy - she had a humble upbringing, and her folks understood the value of a good education. That more than anything explains why she does not squander money on expensive clothes.

17. You're right. Michelle is in a class of her own. It is very admirable
Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 08:21 AM by juajen
that she truly is an original. I don't believe that she ever set out to be compared to Jackie Kennedy. While Jackie was beloved, everyone realized that she felt she was definitely above the fray; while, Michelle Obama is setting a pace that will be difficult for other First Ladies to follow, be they Democratic or Republican, and is comfortable being in her own very beautiful skin.

Even though I did not support the Obama nomination, I love the way Michelle is handling her new job. It's a pity First Lady's are not paid when you consider the hard work some of them take on when they arrive at the White House. Of course, perhaps that is the problem. Some of them just take up space, while others dedicate themselves to helping their country as well as their husband. Lucky for us that she is the latter; and, Hillary Clinton was certainly a pacesetter in that regard, also. Lucky for democrats, both are strong, smart and beautiful. This country certainly needs both.

8. no. the reason why being jackie-o is a compliment is that jackie was a democrat
the other similarities (fashion, beauty and grace) are less important to me than the fact that jackie was a dem.

10. People Aren't...The Corporate Media Is
JS nailed it last night with a montage of all the bobbleheads orgasming over "who she's wearing" and the Obama's meeting the Queen (Baloney Tony Harris of Chicken Noodle Nuze was classic). But this has been their jag for a while now...few people I know give a rat's ass if Michelle is like Jackie O. Two different eras and two different women.

I sure do recall the corporate media attempting to turn Nancy Raygun into another Jackie O....and then a lame attempt to do the same with Pickles.

16. i cannot figure out whether you are:
1) The Self-designated Defender of the historical reputation of Jackie

OR

2) Someone with an obvious distaste, for whatever 'reason', for Michelle and any attention she garners....

one would think one OP by you on this subject would suffice...

18. In terms of being a style icon, maybe she does compare to Jackie, but...
Mrs. Obama, I believe, reaches more people than Jackie. She is more approachable. Jackie was like royalty--she was untouchable. Michelle invites people in--even the Queen took to her immediately and supposedly broke protocol and touched her and Michelle followed and touched her back. Jackie could never let her heart out at that girls school the way Michelle did. Michelle has a truly American story in that she didn't come from privilidge where Mrs. Kennedy did and so I think that makes Michelle an even bigger role model.

23. Your analysis is missing something
like perspective, the media of the 1960's is not the same media that we have today and if Jackie was perceived to be untouchable the media of the day has more to do with that then Jackie herself, who in reality was very approachable. The media of the 60's kept their distance and obviously drew a line at the president and his wife's personal life they weren't constantly in their faces not like today with the media that has a voracious 24 hour news cycle that needs to be fed.

Jackie was a woman and a first lady of her times and Michelle is a woman and a first lady of her times and both represent the very best that America could have hoped for.

19. First of all,
I don't consider Michelle to be like Jackie. Jackie was more haute couture, and Michelle is more down-to-earth...more J. Crew than Valentino.
Secondly, do you know of any young republican wife that comes close to being in the same class with Michelle?

Because the GOP ain't nominating any man with a black wife for president.
