So the enlightened souls on the IOWA SC did the right thing. Well, gee. That's what constitutional amendments are for.

I wouldn't say anything except most everyone around here is acting like it's a done deal. This decision can be overturned by 'the will of the people" faster than you can say FAMILY RESEARCH COUNCIL.

1. Constitutional Amendments are not quick to come by or easy.

3. everythings a process
I am not naieve enough to think that gay marriage rights wont be contested by the assholes out there, they will. its just nice to see the right path being taken every once in a while. even tho i know its still the path.

4. Not so fast...
A constitutional amendment in Iowa is a long, drawn-out process. First, both houses of the legislature have to approve of the amendment in one session. Then, after the next election, both houses have to do that again. After that, the measure is put up for a vote of the citizenry. There is no other possible route for an ammendment.

It's too late in this current session to do that, and it wouldn't pass, anyhow, given the democratic majority.

Any amendment is at least three years off. By then, there will be many tens of thousands of GLBT couples already married in Iowa. Since Iowa has no residency requirement for marriages, that means that couples from anywhere may get married there.

At that point, the ex-post-facto stuff starts kicking in, and there's the issue of full faith and credit to process through the SCOTUS.

No, this isn't going to end. Isn't it fun to know the facts?

12. By that time, there will be too many businesses with a financial interest in keeping gay marriage
No residency requirement? This could bring huge $$ to Iowa as gay couples from all over the midwest go there to get married. Once a certain number of people are making a living off it and towns are benefiting from tax $$, I can't see any realistic chance of getting enough people interested in going through that long, drawn out process.

Thanks for the info!

6. Due to the process in Iowa, they can't get a Constitutional Amendment
in place for years. And in the meantime, more and more states will be legalizing marriage equality.
