http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/us/politics/03budget.html?_r=1&hpwObama's budget got passed in both houses without a single Republican vote. That's the good news.
Now, the bad news: One thing they could all agree on, apparently, was giving the ultra-rich a break.
"Among the amendments that won Senate approval was
a bipartisan proposalthat would raise the estate tax exemption by $1.5 million, to a total of $5 million, and reduce the tax’s maximum rate by 10 percentage points, to 35 percent."
A $3 million gift to the super rich? Torches and pitchforks time.
Presently, the government gets $30 billion from the estate tax, about 9% of the non-military discretionary budget. We're running up all kinds of debt by bailing out the rich and the mess they've made of our economy, why would we now take a hit like this and reward the top 2 percent while we're at it? Something smells rotten in Denmark.
