AZ: "Brewer order reverses Napolitano’s pro-union move"
We Arizonans knew Brewer would suck, the only question was how much would she suck?

Apparently, a big, stinky, perfectly republican coiffed LOT!

http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/stories/2009/03/30/daily74.html?ana=from_rss

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday reversed an executive order by former Gov. Janet Napolitano that allowed labor unions to organize state government workers.

Napolitano issued her order in January, shortly before resigning to become U.S. secretary of homeland security in the Barack Obama administration. Her order allowed unions to organize state workers and required state agencies to conduct talks with the unions.

Brewer’s executive order erased that and reaffirmed the state’s right-to-work laws, which do not require any workers to be represented by unions.

Brewer is a Republican who backs the state’s pro-business right-to-work laws. Napolitano, a Democrat, received backing from labor interests during her runs for governor in 2002 and 2006.

NOTE in the interest of full disclosure: This is a notoriously RW, pro-biz source.

1. I lived in AZ for many years.
The republicans there are totally retrograde.

2. I am rather surprised at how progressive Arizona has become since I lived there in the mid 80
I remember when Evan Mecham was impeached and how the state Republican Party was adamant about holding a special election rather than let Rose Mofford, the Secretary of State and next in line, step up. The State Constitution used the male pronoun when referring to the governor; therefore, the state constititon allowed only men to be governor. By virtue of not having a Y chromosome, Mofford was disqualified from that office.

Now the state has had THREE women in a row as governor: Jane Hull (Republican), Janet Napolitano (Democrat) and Jan Brewer (Republican). I have to say, I'm impressed.

3. Our state legis, however, are just marginally better than the '80s only
by virtue of the downtown Phoenix renaissance. Residents in that area have largely come from back East and brought their politics with them; unfortunatly, our batshit crazy rural legis still have a numerical advantage but things are changing (not ALL of our rural legis are nuts, either, there are a couple of decent ones).

4. to be honest it's just like every other state
left leaning cities and town communities, right leaning exurbs and rural areas. the problem is, it's pretty much split 50/50 with the republican's having a slight, but decreasing edge.

plus, who ever wins maricopa county (Phoenix and it's suburbs) wins the state. 60% of the population lives in this county. good news is, it's trending not only blue, but becoming very progressive and liberal. which has been accelerated by the implosion of our housing based economy, not to mention all of the people that move here from more progressive states and cities.

arizona actually has been called the first 3 party system in the country because the spread is something like 33% dem, 35% rep, 30% ind, 2% lib. you can't win with out the independents here.

7. Maricopa County is NOT just Phoenix--he's absolutely adored in the retirement communities
and they GOTV in droves.

Geographically, Maricopa is an enormous county as are all counties in AZ unlike in most states.

The retirement communities easily balance Phoenix.

6. Why didn't Napolitano issue this order during the first six years she was in office?

8. Good point. I know she's popular here on DU but she has plenty
of baggage (her very close, uncomfortable ties to Sherriff Arpaio.

Still, she was a damn sight better than most
