Second Red River crest could top historic mark, "Here we go again"
One of the things that made last wk's flood crest lower than feared and recede fast, was that is was sub-freezing. They had another blizzard and snowstorm, and now it is all melting. And thunderstorms are predicted, with rain. And more rain.

So, here they go again.

Volunteers and sandbags may be the key to winning round two of this spring’s epic flood fight, but officials pledged their commitment today to comprehensive flood protection in the Red River Valley. “We may need to make some more sandbags,” Fargo City Commissioner Tim Mahoney said this afternoon. “Here we go again.”

The latest crest prediction, released this morning by the National Weather Service, shows there is a 75 percent probability the Red could swell to 41 feet in Fargo this month. The forecast comes on the heels of a mostly successful flood fight against the record 40.82-foot crest last Saturday.

“It brings home in a huge way that we need permanent flood control in the Red River Valley,” North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven said in a press conference held at the North Dakota Air National Guard base. “This is a regional effort."

The epic battle rallied local, state and federal officials from Minnesota and North Dakota today, with flood fight leaders pledging cooperation in a long-term solution....(more@link)

1. Aw jeez. . . good luck you guys...
I hope it doesn't swell too much for the walls.

Are there city and state officials making plans for some more comprehensive flood control? It sounds like a great, job-generating, stimulus friendly project.

3. Reading elsewhere, they are having serious talks about what to do for permanent flood control
Mayor (I think it was) of Fgo says he's expecting 38-39 ft, below levee/sandbag levels, but they will have to keep an eye on them since they will have to not undermine, wash off, etc, for another week. Again.

I grew up in Fargo, sandbagged as a teen in high school, and moved away. Family and friends are still there though.

What a pain. Sandbagging in 15 degree weather, brrrrrrr. Now having to do it again, in warmer weather. Sigh

Perhaps we can chalk it up to one of the many differences between the US and Canada:

4. eastern iowa,southern wisconsin,and northern illinois
could be facing another season of flooding as bad or worse than the last few years. this region still has`t experienced the spring rains . northern illinois soil has broken a record for soil saturated so far this year.

it`s getting warmer and wetter each year in this part of the midwest...

the people of red river valley exemplifies the true american spirit..never give up no matter what is thrown in our way.
