I'm so proud of what those justices did today. I had tears in my eyes when I heard the news. I'm not G, L, B or T but I am a fucking human being. Now then. I've been saying all along that this state is the best kept secret in the country. You put us in charge of the important decisions and believe me we can shoulder them. We may have to start charging, though. In all seriousness. Congratulations! If you're looking for a great place, think about Iowa. The weather sucks at times but our values easily outweigh that small factor. I live in Iowa City (fifteen years now) and I will die here. Never have have I been so proud of a place that I call home than today. Cheers!

1. The best thing is that it would take many years to try
and overturn it by changing the constitution.

It's here to stay.

Our shit is together out here. Western Iowa doesn't have the votes to overturn anything.

know that RW wackos would just ignore it from a state they perceive as being liberal. Maybe, just maybe, there will be 1 or 2 people in the US who will stop and rethink their position now.

Anyone wondering about why in the world anyone would live in state most forget even exists, well, this is why. Acceptance and community. Welcome to Iowa, my adopted homestate. Seems like a good opportunity for Iowa City to be a good center for having these marriages, and perhaps in the course of doing so, help them rebuild more from the horrendous floods they had a year ago.

58. Train wreck?
Yeah, that "train wreck" saved the Democratic party and made an Obama presidency possible. Which is great, but I still would have rather had him as President in January 2005. Ended the clusterfuck in Iraq, fixed the economy before it got anywhere near as bad as it was, and probably would have ended up with Obama in 2012 after an 8 year Dean presidency anyway.

Dean would have crucified the Chimp. You guys really messed up on that one. (Especially the idiot who set up the PA system that night - but we won't even go there!)

60. Sebastian...take a minute and look at what you're sayin.....
your blaming the failure of the Dean campaign on a PA system?

BTW...the scream happened after he posted a distant 3rd here. Even a 3rd place finish or worst doesn't keep you from going on if you got your shit together (ask Bill C)....his campaign didn't, though... and that can't be blamed on Iowa...it's his and Trippi's fault...

Deans campaign never was anything more than a few college kids running around in orange hats here...they put on a show for the media, but they didn't have their act together in getting boots on the ground.

37. It was pretty peaceful. We got there @ 5:15 for the 5:30 rally
There was a small podium on the sidewalk in front of Old Cap. Rainbow flags, signs, whistles and noise makers were handed out.
I feared that there might be a disturbance, but nothing but very happy people. Lots of dogs. Lots of hugging. Pictures being taken at an arch. One couple wore bridal veils for a pic.
Seems like everybody had a camera. I mean this is a truly historic day in Iowa.
Speech by one of the attorneys for the plaintiffs. We left after that. It was cold and Mrs. Lib has trouble standing.
What a bunch of happy people.
Bet the bars are REALLY busy tonite.

Grew up in Humboldt/Dakota City. Been in the IC area almost 18 years, first North Liberty, now on an acreage near WB. One of us worked at Mercy IC, the other at ACT. So proud of our state supreme court. Partisan politics is not an issue with our judges. And so proud of our whole state (except for Steve King). Iowa does have a lot to offer, especially great public schools, great parochial schools, if young families are considering a move. Can't beat the health care, and there are good jobs to be had. Grandkids graduated from ISU last spring, and both found great jobs in Des Moines within weeks. Nephew graduated ISU in '05, had a job with Ames engineering firm waiting for him. Hooray for our side!

48. What's notable
is that this decision was not a 5-4 (or otherwise one-vote) majority, it was a unanimous ruling. Clearly, that is a first in this mighty struggle for freedom and equality.

Still, the only three states that allow equal marriage have done so only by operation of the supreme courts of those states; we still need to see one state affirmatively vote for equality in their legislature, and be signed by the governor (or a governor's veto overturned by a legislature) before we can say definitively that the tide is turning on this issue.

59. we Iowans tend to be understated
and a rather introspective quiet lot...but damn!!! we've been on a roll for awhile here...it feels good and I don't mind sayin' so.
To the commenter that talked about us F'n up the caucuses in '04.....nothin' stopped other states from havin' their say, if they wanted to in 04...this election season proves it can be done and run out to the end if people want it, where were you in 04?....and BTW...it was largely former Kerry troops manning the barricades for Obama, I know cuz I worked both campaigns...

Don't mean to be combative, but blaming Iowa because we sent somebody out of here in 04 that eventually got more Dem votes than any other candidate in history, taking on a wartime President seems a little whiny. The odds always were against us. It's rare that Americans change horses in midstream during a war. And who knows, if the truth ever comes out about what happened in Ohio, we may yet be vindicated.

But the people here didn't quit and start pointing fingers at the rest of the country for not doing there part in overturning the Bushies...we just got back to work organizing and eventually got the course of the country changed. Instead of chuckin' rocks at us, look at us for who we are and what we've done.
