Seoul: No Missile Launch Saturday

SEOUL, April 4 (UPI) -- Seoul has determined that North Korea will not hold a planned rocket launch Saturday, sources say.

After holding an emergency meeting of security ministers in the office of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, an unnamed official said it had been deemed unlikely that Pyongyang would immediately launch what it says is a communications satellite, the South Korean Yonhap News Agency reported.

"The emergency meeting has been ended. We believe the North will not fire the rocket today," a presidential adviser told reporters, asking not to be identified.

North Korea had been expected to fire the rocket Saturday after monitoring equipment at launch site had been spotted and its official news agency released a statement that the launch was imminent.

Japan, nervously awaiting what it believes is actually a banned test-firing of the North's intercontinental ballistic missile, twice issued false warnings that the rocket had been fired, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso told reporters that the rocket was ready to fire while South Korea's Lee added that Pyongyang was unlikely to back down now, the newspaper said.
