OneNewsNow.com Poll

Are you surprised that a state in America's heartland has now legalized homosexual 'marriage'?

* Yes
* No

The poll is at: http://www.onenewsnow.com/Poll.aspx?ekfrm=476550 (if you get Rick-rolled, as DU links to OneNewsNow sometimes do, you can access it from the afa's homepage www.afa.net and scroll down to onenewsnow)

2. Darn grass seed can't seem to catch a break!
Think I'll start carrying my camera in the car for awhile. Capture some church billboard commentary.

10. No, God tortures and kills family members ...
No, God tortures and kills family members to placate himself into forgiving the rest of us for being the fucking sinners he created in the first place.

Remember..... he writes all the rules, and a human sacrifice is required !

4. How did the Midwest get to be "the heartland"?
Iowa wasn't even part of the US until 1803 and wasn't a state until 1843. The heart is generally in the body at birth. It is perhaps a bit mean to deny the metaphor to this region when it's clearly important to their self image, but that has a very nasty side to it which we see all too often: the idea that those who went West were somehow the torchbearers of the true American spirit and their descendants defenders of all that is noble. The real story of who went West and why isn't nearly so flattering.

Is there a huge difference between Midwesterners referring to themselves as "The Heartland" and some Republican jackass in Galax referring to "The Real Virginia" or "The Real America"?

5. Easy question
Heartland is used in geography to refer to the central areas of a country.......from wiki.

/snobbyeasternrant??...you have no idea how used to that we are.

6. Meant affectionately , of course

I haven't actually been to Iowa, but I have a first cousin who lives there. I think she works for Caterpillar. I have driven across country, and found something to like about each place, even if I did get woozy from the heat in Phoenix. I can honestly say that I could live anywhere in the US that I have been, though I prefer to be close to oceans.

Now about the geographic use, it got me wondering. I wonder if you drew a line from Point Barrow Alaska to Christiansted, and one from Eastport ME to Honolulu where the intersection of the two lines would be.

I didn't take your post as a slam.....I wouldn't have fist bumped if I had.

I think the continental U.S. center is somewhere in Kansas...but I have no idea about your question.

BTW.....my best friend has lived in Christiansted since the early 80's. It is the top of my list for favorite places I have visited.

I have lived in several place and visited many around the country....I find most people to be not that much different anywhere I have gone. I am a 6th generation Iowan.....So this is home to me.

The last time I found him on the web, Louis was working at Chicken Charlie's Roadhouse.
