Knowing,... we went to watch this movie
why? Sounded interesting... I like the actor... whatever

The previews made it intriguing.

We left the movie theater shaking our heads.

We literally were hit besides the head with a better produced La Haye left behind series, (and even a tad more logical)

Of course the reference to all these symbols that all you are well familiar with ... to put it midlv... will be watching Bill Mahrer's Religoiously tomorrow.

I was thinking this movie, followed by Mahrer's for a good spirited discussion on how we are hit over the head with these things every day of the week and twice on Sunday... no pun

Oh and what do we have in the my... er HIstory Channel right now? The Apocalypse

These days it's gotten to the point that even in fiction I am rebelling against this... and have major characters that had the penultimate religious experience, going... there is no god... this is bullshit.

I am starting to think, revealed religions have an image that all ends with a punishing god... and they want to bring this about ...

1. Good luck with "Religulous"
I went into it with my finely-honed disdain for organized religion.

I came out feeling sorry for the people Maher had exploited for that nasty bit of work.

And I really was set to love the movie, but there was a meanspiritedness about it that repulsed me.

Maybe movies about any kind of religion are just not very good....................

3. I loved it actually
And the message was on point

And my disdain for organized religion has grown exponentially over the years.

I think it started, no shit, here, when I took care of a Jehova's witness. She was dehydrated... badly dehydrated

She need fluids

Would not accept my water with a little salt, no kidding, because of religious belief

Of course (and I grew Jewish) the man who wanted to prevent us transporting his wife with a bad fracture to the ER because she was unpure (that time of the month) and it was the shabbess didn't help either. That day I ended up quoting Isaiah to this idiot... which left him sputtering. Women are NOT supposed to read the bible or for that matter the Kabalah or the Talmud... I also threatened him and his buddies with arrest if they even came near to throwing those rocks at my ambulance. That story actually ended somewhat happily.. after a lot of intervention and threatening, the woman got the religious divorce too and left this idiot.

Don't get me started with a Catholic Priest who went into one of my unsecured Hazmat areas to give last rights... we ended up having to decon one more body... by force. Or the Padre that refused to come give last rights, because my lord, it was four in the morning...

So my images of modern religions are not the best... and my disdain... is deep

7. I grew up Catholic with a Jewish mother, in
an Italian neighborhood, and then went on to get a Jesuit education, work for the New Catholic Left as one of my first adventures as a lawyer, and lived with a Jesuit priest for two years.

And those were only the good parts.

When I worked as a volunteer with Shanti in San Francisco when AIDS was ravaging the city about twenty years ago, I dealt with good Christian parents time and again who refused to come to be with their dying sons, with priests and ministers who refused to provide any kind of comfort to the afflicted, and who found great fault with me, a straight woman, who was actually trying to help these heathen pervert sinners.

The other things that turned me away were the machinations of the Vatican aimed at me personally, and the sudden horror of discovering that my whole family was under surveillance because of my life. That left me despising them forever.

I thought, though, that Maher's treatment of people who genuinely believed was shameful. That was where the movie lost me. I wasn't surprised when it didn't do well at the box office......................

4. Being progressive doesn't immune you from being...
mean spirited, it seems.

Regrettably.

9. Either way,
he's nasty and intolerant and smug. It showed him in a very bad light, which was a classic case of what my grandmother used to call "You spit up in the air, it lands in your face."

5. I liked Religulous but felt it was too self absorbed. It had it's moments and yes,
the Religious nutbags want the end to come because at the base of it is their insecurity about their sanity. They want to be proven right at any cost. Have you ever known a truly crazy person? They stop at nothing because they have to make the world their reality. These people have been driven to mental illness because of their upbringing and/or Religious leaders feeding their paranoia.
