Xerox in $100 million deal to outsource data center: report
Xerox in $100 million deal to outsource data center: report
By Robert Schroeder, MarketWatch

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Xerox Corp. will pay $100 million over six years to outsource data-center services to Indian company HCL Technologies Ltd., The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing both Xerox and HCL.

HCL will manage disaster-recovery preparation for Xerox as part of the deal and consolidate the U.S. company's data centers in North America and Europe, the Journal reported.

Shares of Xerox finished Friday trading at $5, up fractionally.

Xerox has been restructuring to cut costs and laid off 4,900 workers last year, according to the Journal.

On March 25, Moody's Investors Service said it revised its ratings outlook on Xerox to stable from positive because of the company's announcement of weaker first-quarter operating results.

3. So it's not because American and European workers are dumb? Wow, what a change of excuse.

BTW: Redundant data centers are a good thing; and given the terrorist attacks in India...

Whatever.

4. Why in the HELL would anyone outsource disaster recovery preparation to another company
especially a company that isn't even in the U.S.?

Hell, if I were a global company, I'd have redundant sites in as many frigging countries as possible. You can never have too much backup.

8. for that exact reason
disaster recovery sites don't make a whole lot of sense if they are in the same building (or city).

Imagine you have a business in San Francisco and you build your DR site also in San Francisco. Earthquake strikes San Francisco and the whole city is down for an eight count. Whole lot of good that DR site is to you.

As to using another company? do doctors have doctors or do they treat themselves? DR is a specialized offering and it makes sense to go to an expert.

11. OK-- if you think this is a good idea...then go ahead and think that.

If you don't understand why this is a bad idea, then I won't bother.

Go back and read what it says...they are OUTSOURCING DISASTER RECOVERY PREPARATIONS to another company IN ANOTHER COUNTRY.

Read it again. And then again.

9. What's Obama's take on this?
He's been rather silent on all of the mass layoffs due to outsourcing.
