This will have bigot heads exploding. President Obama - "We are not at war with Islam".

ANKARA, Turkey — Barack Obama, making his first visit to a Muslim nation as president, declared Monday the United States "is not and will never be at war with Islam."

Calling for a greater partnership with the Islamic world in an address to the Turkish parliament, Obama called the country an important U.S. ally in many areas, including the fight against terrorism. He devoted much of his speech to urging a greater bond between Americans and Muslims, portraying terrorist groups such as al Qaida as extremists who did not represent the vast majority of Muslims.

"Let me say this as clearly as I can," Obama said. "The United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical ... in rolling back a fringe ideology that people of all faiths reject."

The U.S. president is trying to mend fences with a Muslim world that felt it had been blamed by America for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

For instance, at a news conference earlier with Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, he dealt gingerly with the issue of alleged genocide committed by Turks against Armenians during World War I, urging Turks and Armenians to continue a process "that works through the past in a way that is honest, open and constructive."

Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyia, two of the biggest Arabic satellite channels, carried Obama's speech live.

"America's relationship with the Muslim world cannot and will not be based on opposition to al Qaida," he said. "We seek broad engagement based upon mutual interests and mutual respect."

"We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over so many centuries to shape the world for the better, including my own country," Obama said.

The bigots will be popping up all over the net and TV like a "whack a mole" for these remarks. Good. It is about time we had a sensible President in the US who does not want the World to reach end times.

1. Bush said the same thing many times
Not that his behavior was consistent with that statement.

3. No one believed him
and his publicity arm Faux News did not exactly help with that message. Faux News still presents Islam at war with the West.

11. Aye, a proxy " crusade" religious war battling for the real financial war.
The establishment (multinational money interests) count on debt to pull off their ponzi schemes. The muslims put a damper on these rackets by insisting on ethics in finance. Capitalism at its worst ain't pulling its punches, and fake news is its boxing glove, hiding the fist tightly clenching the gold coins.

Islamic banks urged to show west the sharia way forward

By John Aglionby in Jakarta

Published: March 3 2009 02:00 | Last updated: March 3 2009 02:00

Muslim presidents, prime ministers and princes yesterday called on the world to adopt Islamic financial practices to overcome the global crisis and urged Islamic banks to undertake "missionary work" in the west to promote sharia banking.

Almost every speaker at the opening of the fifth World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) in Jakarta lambasted the excesses of "irresponsible, unregulated western financial markets" for triggering the crisis, and touted sharia banking as a framework for a more stable global financial system.

2. With any luck at all, the comment will enrage Franklin Graham to the point
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 08:30 AM by saltpoint
where he'll throw a public temper-tantrum.

Here is Graham on Islam:

- - -
“We’re not attacking Islam but Islam has attacked us. The god of Islam is not the same God. He’s not the son of God of the Christian or Judeo-Christian faith. It’s a different God, and I believe it is a very evil and wicked religion.”

--Rev. Franklin Graham, c. November 10, 2001

The more outraged the nutbags and neocons are with Obama, the more their habitation shrinks, the more they are a pack of marginalized hot-heads, and the less persuasive they become in affecting the national discourse.

Give 'em hell, Franklin.

14. That which causes that nutcase Graham's head to explode
pleases me to no end.

That crook belongs in a rubber room.

And his crook of a daddy, too.

My family knows their family quite well. The Grahams are ruthless, soulless, and mercenary, all about the almighty dollar. Franklin doesn't believe much, if any, of the shyte he spews, but it's very, very profitable. That's what comes of making tent-meetings a family business; a ruthless cynicism willing to appeal to the worst of humanity's motivations and to make wild profit from it.

I don't believe in hell, but if I did, I could easily -- very easily -- imagine the Grahams sizzling in it.

16. Sorry to offend the Grahams' fans if there are any hereabouts, but I
think we agree on the real-estate holding / big money right now Graham empire.

I've never bought Franklin's "conversion" and find him even worse than his old man.

17. A former friend and fundie
pretty much told me the same thing--that the Muslim god is essentially the devil. These people (the fundies, not the Muslims) are wicked crazy mofos that should be pre-empted in every aspect of life. There is a very strong, very hopeful part of me that wishes they would all disappear and go away permanently. i suppose, in one way, that's the wish they've made for themselves as well. I think the world would be a far, far better place without their likes. And it's not just the religious right and all those nutcases, but the extremists in the world--period.

5. Bush said the same thing.
But I hope Obama can get them to believe it.
Osama Bin Laden said his plan with the planes was to get us to invade the mid east so that the many factions/countries of Islam who usually fight with each other, would join forces to fight us. He wanted us to look like we had started a war with Islam.

7. Bush said the same thing

.. but the "and never will" part is uniquely Barackian.

Honestly, though, how many americans felt that they were fighting islam the last 8 years?
Is the analogy of islam=fascism still so popular?

I think that's why I never go to fr.com, even if I'm interested in the "opposition"...

Did you notice the "maggie" girl there trying to be rational? Silly, silly kid.

I think "discussing something with a freeper " is the same as "playing chess with an ape"
