Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot (Photo Gallery)- NRA, KKK, Militia... And Some Sportsmen
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 12:20 PM by KittyWampus
Have to say, even if I was a gun enthusiast, I'd feel a tad out of place at this event.

I can appreciate the sentiment of wanting to get together with like-minded people who share a love of a hobby. And also see the fun in blowing/shooting stuff up. And the skill it takes to handle a weapon and use it accurately.

But DAMN, there really seems to be a preponderance of ill-informed, close-minded and extreme people at this event.

Or maybe it's just a selective grouping of photos?

Scenes From the Real America
By David Weigel 4/6/09 10:54 AM

I spent Saturday at the annual Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot, right outside of Louisville, Ky. Gun enthusiasts of all stripes were there — from the National Rifle Association and sportsmen to militia members to white supremacists and Obama birthers. Here’s a collection of choice photos from the show (after the jump):

35. No these guys are SPREE killers not serial killers...
Pardon my bizarre sense of humor but these are the guys that go postal and wipe out lots of people, not the serial killer who kills a guy, goes a few months and then kills the next guy.

They are so afraid. Afraid of the vague "other". Afraid of the ill defined "them". What a sad, pathetic group of frightened arm chair warriors.

31. The word Reich holds no negative context in its own right
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 08:15 PM by hendo
Reich in and of itself is just a period of reign, or a nation in and of itself. In fact, as evidence to that point, the german legislative building is the Reichstag. Arguably, germany is in the 4th Reich after having been reunified under a democratic government following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Then again, thats not so much german as high school history, something else that guy probably did not successfully complete.

Another thing here that annoys me is the idiots who refer to the religious right as the religious reich. It makes us look no better than the uneducated hick who is wearing the Obama-Biden 4th Reich t-shirt.

edit: although in the 60s-70's popculture, the 4th reich referred to the german post-nazi leadership.

12. I'd love to shoot a machine gun, but I wouldn't set foot there
Too many Timothy McVeigh types there. Knob Creek is notorious for bringing out the extreme stereotypes of right wing paranoia and blatant racism. This event and the Soldier of Fortune convention in Nevada are usually hostile toward the press as well.

14. Just.....wow.
I see nothing but pure concentrated burning stupid on display...and I'm an advocate of the 2nd Amendment. This is far beyond the pale. These people are just totally batshit-whacked and delusional.

At least "Knob Creek" is apparently used by them as a reference to the actual creek near there, and not one of my favorite bourbons.

And the kid wearing ACU's with a Nazi hat...now that's rich! What a sad and pathetic gathering....

34. in fact, bourbon can legally only come from Kentucky waters.
I love the great things that I used to learn on the Food Network.

I wouldn't be surprised if Knob Creek Bourbon used water from Knob Creek. I could probably look it up if I wanted to, but I am not so inclined right now.

38. Actually, that's not true...
Bourbon can be legally made anywhere, but many food commentators miss that point.

http://www.straightbourbon.com/faq.html

Knob Creek bourbon is made at the Beam distillery (it's part of their Small Batch collection which also includes Booker's, Baker's, and Basil Hayden bourbons) and uses whatever water source they pull from (one of many limestone aquifers IIRC) And is is named after Knob Creek itself. It's good hooch. :9
