Hatemonger Pat Boone: Christians Are The New Lepers
That is, quite literally, the claim that Pat Boone makes in his latest column announcing that he, for one, will “refuse to be quarantined”:

{....}

On and on Boone goes, wailing how religion is being treated as “backward, dangerous, and toxic. Like leprosy” and how kids who think Jesus is a hero are being treated as if they “should be ashamed and kept away from the other kids. Like a leper.”

Boone recalls the good old days back in 1988 when he was in the Oval Office as President Reagan signed legislation that permanently established the first Thursday in May as the annual day of national prayer … but those days are long gone and now “sordid, maniacal groups now see me as a leper, a carrier of a noxious infection. And they want me and all other Christians to be silenced. I, Pat Boone, American, refuse to be quarantined.”

How can Jesus save a man's soul when he plainly doesn't fuckin' HAVE any?

40. Since Jesus died for my sins, why do I have to do a damn thing to get to heaven?
His blood washed away my sins 2000 years before my birth, but I don't get to commit sin?
Wasn't his death enough?
Can't I just say "thanks" and do as I please?

66. Actually, since Jesus died for your sins...
...2000 years ago (plus or minus a few decades), if you don't commit any sins then his death was a waste. The value of his death is directly proportional to the number of sins he died for, so you should make the best of it by sinning as much as possible. Only in that way can you give Jesus' death more value.

75. That's awful!
NO NO NO...the idea is to try to overcome our base nature and not sin. I think Pat Boone and the nutty evangelicals are scary but there is a grain of truth to this. We Christians were warned by the Messiah that we will get treated badly by some. I have gotten some weird responses from people when they learn I am a Christian.

77. So my response was really kind of meant to be sarcastic
It's an odd twist of logic to deliberately come to the opposite conclusion that is expected. It's meant to tweak people.

By the way, I gotten a lot more than funny looks from people when they find out I'm NOT Christian. I was told to "get out of this (public) school" if I'm not a Christian, because it was a Christian school. That's a good illustration of the arrogance of at least some Christians - and they weren't the TV evangelicals at the top, these were people in middle school. They basically decide that their rules that they made up to fit their religion supercede the fact that it's a public school. They decide everybody should believe as they do or get out, because they're RIGHT!

I've come to the conclusion that if people want to believe in God, Allah or the flying Spaghetti Monster (and he's cool), that's cool. I have no right to get in the way of that. What really gets me tweaked is when people tell me I'm an evil person for not sharing their delusions and tell me I'm going to hell. Then we catch them with prostitutes or 12 year olds. Those who proclaim the loudest are often the biggest offenders. And they still say they're better than everybody else.

said and done by fundies. I am not a fundie. They have hijacked the image of the Christian and given those of us who do not behave like they do an automatic put-down by some. It's gotten ridiculously bigoted considering we're supposed to be such a big tent. I'm not a Pat Boone listening Christian.

You do remember what 'the Messiah' said when he warned you you'd be treated badly don't you? He said 'rejoice'. He told you to celebrate when mocked for His name's sake.
Funny to me that you and Pat and the rest of your lot on DU do not rejoice when mocked, instead you stamp your feet and demand respect and act all suprised when you are not given the respect due the Messiah himself.
Just saying. Read your own damn book.

4. christianity only has meaning to people like pat boone
if they feel threatened.

it isn't the Peace that passes all understanding -- it isn't the love of Christ -- it isn't love of God -- it showing the same love of others that one would show for themselves -- it feeding the poor -- seeking justice -- it's feeling threatened and IMAGINING that God NEEDS them to defend him/her.

now that's some fucked up arrogance and ignorance.

103. Of course they don't. But the poster I responded to seemed to be condemning all non-atheists.
Hence my pointing out that the vast majority of human beings believe in some sort of god(s), and that his apparently lumping them all in with the likes of Boone was both unfair and ridiculous.

I never meant to defend Boone in any way - quite the opposite in fact. The man is simply vile, and pathetic to boot.

60. Im proud of my belief in God
It is because of my belief in God that I am a Democrat. I believe we have a moral responsibility to care for our fellow man.

If I thought there was no God, that everyone else on this planet is not by brother or siste,r and that the only think that mattered was getting as much treasure as possible for myself--I would be a Republican.

If you still want to treat me like a leper, that's okay.

Now if you want to tell me I am like Pat Boone, that I would have a problem with.

67. Absolutely not. Moral sensibility comes from many places.
My point is not that my faith is "correct". It was simply to state that instead of my faith being a bad thing, as the poster commented, it is the very thing that leads me to agree with folks here on issues of social justice, equality, and love of our fellow human beings.

because I am proud of my faith in God.

If I were to lose my faith, I would still believe in democratic values for other reasons. But, there is no doubt that my faith has led me to those values and that my faith makes my belief in those values even stronger.

I believe that christians, muslims, jews, and atheists who have shared values should be allies, not enemies.

I have to ask why you Chritians reject Christ's teachings so fully on so many subjects. In this case he told you all to rejoice when presecuted. You say "I would have a problem with that" which is not very Jesusish. What lead you to reject his teachings and replace them with demands for personal respect and words of false honor toward yourself and your faith? What specifically lead you to reject Jesus and do it your way?

92. Obviously, I didn't explain it well .
Republicans = me me me me me screw everyone else

Democrats = social justice, equality, peace, etc.

Jesus' message is to love our fellow man, give him our cloak, turn the other cheek etc

Because I follow Jesus message and reject "me me me me" is why I am a Democrat. Although I totally agree that personal religious faith is not the only path to progressive values, it has been my path.

I have no problem with persecution.

I do have a problem with being lumped in with Pat Boone.

just because you cannot make all the rules.

Are Christians being put in Concentration Camps? Are they being burned at the stake? Or forced at the point of a sword to convert to another religion?
Yesterday (Sunday) I happened to notice that the churches in my town looked pretty full, so it does not appear as if there are any restrictions to attending services.

The Christians like Boone, can't run the show, so they whine about how badly they are mistreated.
They have as much right to their beliefs as I have to mine - which is what they don't get. That anyone who disagrees with their beliefs is entitled to their beliefs, whether the Christians like it or not.

Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 05:18 PM by wolfgangmo
Great story.

The grandmother of a friend of mine is this sweet little old 76 year old white haired lady who is RC to her toenails, but also very liberal. She actually follows the advice laid out in the new testament; the parts about loving your neighbor and helping those less fortunate. She is the real deal.

And she used to get steaming angry about right wing nuts showing up on her doorstep and challenging her to find a "personal relationship" with god. Of course she didn't say anything about it to the doorsteppers as that wouldn't be "polite or Christian."

But she came up with a great idea. She started to invite them in to pray with her. When everyone was sitting comfortably in the living room she would ask them if they were ready to start. When they said yes, she would slide off her chair like a good Catholic and kneel on the floor as start praying the rosary - in it's original latin form. For those of you who don't know this takes over an hour. Did I mention that she has hardwood floors.

After she finished she would look up, say "my, where has the time gone. I need to go to church now." She would put on her coat, thank the numb kneed doorstoppers and tromp to church.

And they never came back. She referred to them as "weak kneed Christians."

Just because you finally realized that's what people have always thought about you doesn't mean you're being persecuted.

15. These people are absurd.
How many members of congress are atheists? Who's keeping these Christian whiners from going to church every damn day if they want? Hell, they can build a sacred pillar and crawl to the top if threy want and spend the rest of their life there. They can get a soapbox, hop up on it, and preach that the End Times begin next Tuesday because the Beast 666 has been aroused by Michelle Obama's bare arms.

18. Why does Pat Boone hate Hawai'i so much?
I know someone who had Hansen's disease. In fact, he still maintains a place at Kalaupapa, which he uses as sort of a country home!

He very much resents the use of the term "leper". His take: "It's OK to call the disease 'leprosy', but don't you ever call me a leper!"

yet I would fight for the right for anyone to hold their religious beliefs in this country, even when many xtians look down on me, or would love to see me roasted on a spit for my lack of "faith". I think there is a lot of good in all religions, so why do they always expect special treatment and rights over others? I'm just sick of it.

Hyper-religious loonies are not treated like "lepers"..they are treated like delusional dangerous people..

Lepers try their darndest to NOT infect other people..the wacky religiosos are ALL ABOUT infecting everyone with their delusions..

The odd part is that THEY (the right wing loons() are the ones who would treat lepers like... well lepers...

Normal, kindly people would and DO extend their help to lepers without the judgmental fear and loathing of the hyper -religious..

......

as a 12 year old Girl Scout, our troop took a boat to a leper colony in Panama.. It was on an isolated island near the San Blas Islands.. Whole families (lepers and non-lepers) were quarantined there. We took them gifts for christmas..and looking back, there were some girls whose parents "would not let them go".. I now know which party their parents probably belonged to :(..

65. Do armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) carry Christianity like they carry leprosy (M. leprae)?
If so, no wonder Texas is so FOX-UNIFORM.

• 1 in 6 armadillos found in Texas and Louisiana coastal marshes harbor leprosy (Mycobacterium leprae)
• The disease may be completely absent among animals in better drained areas
• Leprosy has evolved among armadillos by natural means and is likely present among armadillos in similar environments in other countries
• Human and armadillo leprosy infections show similar environmental tendencies in their geographical distribution
• Some cases of human disease probably result from zoonotic transmission from armadillos, but the real risk for leprosy infection through contact with armadillos seems to be extremely low. At this time, most people in the U.S. still appear to acquire their disease mainly through contact with infected family members

And it's true that I see Pat Boone as a "as a leper, a carrier of a noxious infection" but that has nothing to do with Christianity. Rather it has to do with the fact that he's a right wing Republican shill whose used by date was up about 500 years ago but who still thinks he's relevant to modern day society somehow

Obama to Worship Jesus with Homosexual Child Molesters
Posted on Tuesday, April 07, 2009 8:18:42 PM by Mathias Brinkley

My countrymen, it is a dark time for those of us that know how fiendish the homosexual agenda in this country really is. Iowa and Vermont. Now the news breaks that Obama the Shadow King is inviting homosexual couples to his Easter Party at the White House. Truly an epic perversion of American cultural values, all across our nation.

---

The White House is allocating tickets for the upcoming Easter Egg Roll to gay and lesbian parents as part of the Obama administration’s outreach to diverse communities.

Families say the gesture shows that the new Democratic administration values them as equal to other families. And for many, being included in the annual tradition - dating to 1878 - renews hope that they will have more support in their quest for equal rights in matters such as marriage and adoption than under the previous administration.

---

They’ve taken our money and now they’re brainwashing our culture.
