Randi Rhodes vs Ed Schultz

Could someone please explain to me the rivalry between Ed Schultz and Randi Rhodes?

Was it a simple personality clash over who could be the top progressive talk show host?

Did it have something to do with Air America Radio?

I've heard several stories but nothing concrete. Any help is greatly appreciated.

BTW... I thought Ed Schultz got off to a good start with his new show today. But why 2 conservatives and only 1 liberal in his round-table segment?

1. Ed Schultz never signed on with Air America and
Randi did. Schultz never liked or respected AA. Perhaps the rivalry stems at least in part from that.

Ed's doing very well for himself, but I haven't heard anything from Randi. Any news about her?

12. No, he's not
WDTW carries some Air America shows (mostly after 6:00 and Rachel's MSNBC replay at 5 a.m.) and some Dial Global shows. Ed, Bill Press, Stephie and now Thom Hartmann are all Dial Global.

3. Both Ed and Randy were together on the radio and made nice ....
.... last summer. Both of them went out of their way to apologize and
"make the peace."

Randi did say Ed was right the A.A. was poorly run.

11. On Ed's radio show yesterday he was talking about progressive radio
and mentioned a number of people on the air, including Thom Hartman. He also mentioned, though namelessly, some that would be returning to the air soon, this can't be anybody but Randi. It seems the truce is holding.

4. Ed called Randi a slut. On-air. Twice.
It was a dispute over who had greater ratings numbers in Portland. Both claimed the highest ratings. When a caller told Ed that Randi has also been making the claim, Ed went into a meltdown tirade and called Randi a slut.

6. tee-hee
Randi had the coveted "drive-time" slot, if I remember right, and Ed has always been noon-to-three here in Portland -- that alone could influence the number of listeners. I wasn't generally a listener to either program, though Randi had some interesting guests on now and then.

7. Randi told a story quite a while ago..
she and some other radio people were called to D.C. and met with a bunch of big Dems. They wanted a "mouthpiece", so to speak. Randi turned them down flat-said she didn't want to be controlled by anyone, but Ed accepted. She's always considered him a "whore". So, she started the animosity, and after that Ed started bashing her, and AAR. I used to agree with her, but in reality, look where Ed is now. I'm not a fan of his, but he will do a good job for the party, and probably convert a lot of repubs, so that is a good thing.

8. Wrong timeline. Randi started dissing ED after Ed called her a slut on air.
See my above post.

9. well, I really can't be sure, but it was years ago
when Randi told that story, and I had just kind of heard of Ed. I seem to recall the "slut" stuff way after that, but I could be wrong.

14. Yes. That's the story I remember hearing her tell a number of times--
with the addition of money in the mix. Senate Dems wanted to help promote lefty talk radio to counteract right-wing talkers. This was before AAR went on the air. Money... financial assistance was offered, and Randi turned them down. She didn't want to be owned by or obligated to anyone.

*** This is good - Randi talks about it on C-SPAN with Brian Lamb in Dec. 2005.

C-SPAN Transcript here!

...and Randi was ripping on Ed back in 2003, as discussed on this DU thread.

16. Oh sure! I periodically check for Randi news and saw this thread...
Hey, did you see this bit on Randi?

... ... ... ... ... ...

Did you read that interview with Brian Lamb? It's fairly long, but the part that applies to Ed Schultz is towards the end.
