Guess who came to school today.

Helen Thomas and Bob Schieffer won the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award at Washington State University today. For the first time I ended up in front of the lens. I like it behind the camera but for this photo with Ms. Thomas I will gladly stand in front with her.

10. Thank you very much, most photojournalists
shoot differently than I do. I look for a moment before I push the little button. Every person will give you that "moment" you just have to watch for it:

16. Schieffer's
discussion was very enlightening, he was a big proponent for the war but realized how wrong it was. He actually seemed apologetic for his support. Ms. Thomas minced no words when she spoke of Bush.

I posted one of my photojournalist shots above. I try to catch people in little moments, like they are in thought. Back in the 60s and 70s photojournalists strived for that look. Look back on shots of the Kennedys and you'll see what I mean.

26. FIRST - congratulations on your wonderful deserved fabulous award - but I loved
the one with the surfboard even more.
And SECONDLY your photo of Helen Thomas simply knocked my socks off. They are somewhere in the hallway, that's how far they travelled.
I think that is about as good as the best of Leibowitz, on a par. Mind you not her ordinary work. Her best.
I rhapsodize whenever my feet are cold, and I swear, you made my day.

I have had the great honor to hear Ms.Thomas give a lecture in my town during the middle of the Bush years, and she took questions from the audience.
It was a feast for a progressive Democrat to meet her in person.

I'm thrilled I did not miss this thread.
Did I tell you how much I liked that photo you took?

:)

Even my evening bag is big enough to hold a point and shoot, without a camera I am not dressed.
Nice to "meet" you Michael. Very descriptive shot of Shieffer, too.

47. Nice going!
Helen has been a friend of my family for over 40 years, and it is still a privilege to
meet with her every time we make back to DC. She is looking back to her old self, I see,
which pleases me to no end. She was pretty sick last year, and took a while to recover.
She will be 89 this year, and is still as sharp as she was decades ago.

This pic has been seen before on DU, and doesn't have as picturesque a background, but
this was one with my younger daughter, my wife and myself at one of her favorite breakfast
spots near the White House in 2007:

both the one of you and Helen and yours of Helen (and the one of Schieffer ain't bad either, lol).
