2. Looks like good news.
Hasn't the Vermont Supreme Court weighed in in support of gay marriage?

3. I have no idea...
you don't hear a whole lot about Vermont in southwest Virginia... I need to get out of here...

Still, first Iowa, and now Vermont. :D

6. Found this on the court's ruling:
The court ruling, issued on 2000-DEC-20, said, in part:

Granting equal rights to gays and lesbians

"arouses deeply-felt religious, moral, and political beliefs...The issue before the Court, moreover, does not turn on the religious or moral debate over intimate same-sex relationships, but rather on the statutory and constitutional basis for the exclusion of same-sex couples from the secular benefits and protections offered married couples."

"We hold that the state is constitutionally required to extend to same-sex couples the common benefits and protections that flow from marriage under Vermont law. Whether this ultimately takes the form of inclusion within the marriage laws themselves or a parallel 'domestic partnership' system or some equivalent statutory alternative rests with the legislature." 2

26. 10 years ago in Baker the VT Supremes
left it up to the legislature to either extend marriage to gay and lesbian folks or to provide them with all the benefits of marriage under another name. The legislature chose to create civil unions. VT was the first state in the country to provide civil unions and now it's the first state to provide marriage equality through the legislative process.

7. Vermont is the first to legalize gay marriage through a vote by the legislature,
even though it is now the fourth state in which gay marriage is legal.

11. Four down, one to fix (California), and 45 left
though I suspect once we get some more states on our side, it's just a matter of time before it goes before the US Supreme Court where they'll rule in our favor, much like they ruled in favor of inter-racial marriages more than forty years ago.

25. The veto override just made it in the state house by a vote of 100-49.
The state senate voted 23-5 to override the governor's veto.
