Right wing attacks ‘wealthy homosexual activists’ for pushing the ‘tyranny’ of marriage equality

from ThinkProgress:

Right wing attacks ‘wealthy homosexual activists’ for pushing the ‘tyranny’ of marriage equality.

For years, conservatives have attacked “activist judges” for ruling that bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional. Today, the Vermont legislation overrode a veto by Gov. Jim Douglas (R) and became the first state to approve same-sex marriage through the legislature — without the help of any courts. However, this fact didn’t deter the far right, which immediately began putting out statements decrying the “wealthy homosexual activists” who are driving this movement to dismantle “democracy.” A sampling:

Tony Perkins, Family Research Council: “Same-sex ‘marriage’ is a movement driven by wealthy homosexual activists and a liberal elite determined to destroy not only the institution of marriage, but democracy as well. Time and again, we see when citizens have the opportunity to vote at the ballot box, they consistently opt to support traditional marriage.”

Mathew Staver, Liberty Counsel: “By redefining marriage, the Vermont legislature removed the cornerstone of society and the foundation of government. The consequences will rest on their shoulders and upon those passive objectors who know what to do but lack the courage to stand against this form of tyranny.”

Concerned Women for America: “Vermont legislators’ futile attempt to replace God by vainly redefining marriage eerily follows how that first man and woman acted on the first temptation — and the root of all temptations — to act as if they were gods. That one decision by Adam and Eve to believe that they could ‘be like God’ separated them from God, destroyed the peace that they had experienced, and ushered in what some would call ‘unintended consequences’ of pain and destruction.”

Andrew Sullivan looks at the post “judicial activism argument” world.

try to create an illusion of their opponents being the "wealthy" ones?

5. It's their usual schtick.
It's not them or the corporate elites who are wealthy... it's "liberals".

I still wonder if their audience will ever catch on to the fact that they're being played... they're just rubes to these liars who they (for whatever reason) look up to... nothing more than useful idiots... maybe someday they'll wake up.

Mathew Staver, Liberty Counsel: “By redefining marriage, the Vermont legislature removed the cornerstone of society and the foundation of government.

I better check w/ my gay neighbor(s) about what I have to do so they will let me live under their tyranny.

12. Tony should try to go out and save some of these men and
women that are wiping out their entire families.

We are using the wrong tactics to fight these idiots, we need to go after their (supposed Christian values) and turn it on them. Tony doesn't have time to go work with the poor and disenfranchised because they have no money to give to his billion dollar empire.

Tactics, Tactics... Tony is a millionaire himself....just sayin..

18. Marriage by definition in Church but not in civil law.
You'll be happy to know that your "Church were GOD can watch" won't be required to unite two men or two women in holy matrimony. That church can still set its own rules for what marriage means in a sacred context.

Procreation was the result of marriage? Really? Have you any idea how procreation happens?

Trying to get folks to THINK about the semantics involved in sentences that we are in the habit of glossing at a very general level of organization.

33. Seriously - for the life of me I cannot understand why people
think allowing two other people who love one another to marry is in any way a threat to their own marriages. I have never understood this.

And they'll continue to spin and attempt to create some "rationale" for their bigotry, but there is no rationale for it - they simply expose themselves as fearful bigots - afraid of "the gay" to use Maddow's term.

I think they'll need to find a new issue soon, as more and more states realize that denying an entire segment of their population equal rights simply won't hold constitutional water.

(A few nice human interest features in papers across the country featuring anything but "wealthy, elites" desiring marriage might not hurt, either. Humanizing this fight is so integral to winning complete acceptance. It's so easy to demonize an entire group of people - it's harder by far to look one person in the face and say: "you're not deserving of basic rights".)

37. It seems the President feels equality is a threat
he opposes equal rights, and he is extemely well spoken, so he ought to be able to explain his position to you, I would think. Write him and ask him why he said he fully supported marriage equality in 1996, and now claims his God, who approves of torture and fraud, tells him my family is worthy of contempt. Ask him to specifically and clearly explain is thinking. So that all of us can understand his fears, or his political wagering with other people's rights.
