FUCK. My homeowners insurance is getting cancelled.
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 11:02 PM by nonconformist
I believe they've been looking for an excuse to cancel us since we had the audacity to make a legitimate claim. One claim in 6 years. Shame on us that a tornado hit our fucking house.

They came out to our house out of the blue and took pictures of everything. They found a small leak over the back porch. We called and asked if we fixed it, if they would keep our policy. They said no. Perfect.

ETA: The tornado happened over a year ago. Everything was settled after that, then they sent out a guy to do an inspection and take pictures of every nook and cranny of our house last week. All they found was that tiny leak over the back porch.

Company is Encompass, a subsidiary of Allstate.

1. State Farm?
They've been pulling this crap for years. Friends had zero claims in over 20 years, and State Farm canceled them, even though 95% of what they stated in the cancellation letter was complete bullshit.

5. State Farm paid after a burglary 2 years ago
and hasn't made any noises about house inspections or anything else.

I suppose it'll happen sooner or later, though. They do hate people they consider risky.

6. Wow, we have State Farm...
...and we haven't had any problems.

Maybe our luck is running out.

I car hit me, and State Farm wanted to total my car. I fought like hell and called them daily--stating my case.
They finally caved and paid $14,000 in repair costs. My husband still can't believe they paid it.

Maybe my tenacity will come back to bite me in the ass.

We just made another claim with them because of a flooded basement, due to a frozen pipe.

Scary. I didn't know SF was famous for that.

24. Funny, State Farm Canceled 2 of the 3 Houses Owned by Our
family but the only one that had ever filed a claim (grease fire in kitchen) was the one that they did't cancel. It was 10 years ago and that house is still covered by State Farm, as is our current home. Didn't appear to be any rhyme or reason.

26. state farm left Hawaii after the two hurricanes WITHOUT PAYING ANYTHING!!!
Every other home owner had to chip in to a State Fund to cover some of the claims and future claims...

And there were others as well...

2. That sucks...
...what insurance company is this, so we can all avoid this rotten company?

What a horrible way to conduct business. It's not like you left the door unlocked
and you were robbed. A frickin tornado hit your house. Geez.

If the actuaries at this insurance company had any brains, they'd keep you insured. What are the
chances of your house being hit by a tornado again? One in a brazillion.

Sorry about this.

7. Encompass, a subsidiary of Allstate.
That is exactly what my husband said. What are the chances that would happen again? And wouldn't they want to keep a customer that they had to pay a claim to so they could recoup that money? It boggles the mind.

I'm sorry that you're getting cancelled. I hope that you can find a different insurer soon.

13. ok. but if everything was settled... why did you allow insurance co. dudes on your property...
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 11:10 PM by 1
to take pictures in the first place? and how do these "pictures" prove some sort of leak? is it that obvious? or just some sort of made up bullshit.

is the insurance company somehow claiming that you didn't use the settlement to correct the problems from the tornado?

this still makes no sense to me.

ok. i just saw your edit to the op. you now have to demand (in writing) an explanation of how a small leak on a porch allows the insurance co. to terminate your policy.

once you have that written explanation, THEN you can go off and do all of the things others are suggesting. get their bullshit in writing. that is the first thing to do.

18. There is a small leak, but it's not very noticable.
You have to really look for it.

It wasn't part of the tornado damage, and they're not claiming it was. They're just saying that there is a leak, and it's an "unacceptable exposure", whatever the fuck that means.

And no, it doesn't make any sense at all.

9. State Insurance Commission
Call them.

We had auto insurance cancelled after we made a burglary claim, and then were hit with a freak hail storm a few months later. We pitched a fit and they relented in pretty short order.

25. Let me second this suggestion
In another lifetime nearly two decades ago I worked in the insurance industry. Part of my job included responding to inquiries from the state insurance commission regarding consumer complaints. Regulators can be quite aggressive and successful in seeking redress for consumers they believe have been wronged. And the insurance companies will not fight a battle that they canot justify.

17. Try Farmers. We had to dump All State.
Lightening hit our house, and many others in the neigbhorhood. We had a whole house surge protector, but it rode the phone line, and zapped things connected to that, and by extension - other things connected to those items. We had never had a claim, so they not only cancelled our no claim credit, but then up'd our rates. The premiums almost doubled. We had about 30 days to find a new company - so we let them pay out the claim, and did just that. We're with Farmers now, and they didn't penalize us for the claim since it was an act of god (go figure, one does penalize acts of god, another doesn't).

a thousand. We had to re-roof the whole side. They have not been out here since the guy came to give an estimate. This is scary. I think your Company needs to be reported.

23. mine was cancelled too, about 3 years ago
Same basic story. They did an inspection, decided that they didn't like my siding, which has like 5 cracked tiles in 2000 square feet of siding, said they wanted to remove the siding from coverage. I said no. After six years of business without a single claim I figured they needed my $600 more than I needed their product. I figured they would back down. They didn't, and I went without insurance for a couple years until recently getting a policy for about $400 a year from an independent agent.

It still ticks me off though that so many of them insist that I must have $200,000 worth of insurance coverage on a house I only paid $35,000 for.

So far I have only gotten one letter from my former insurance company saying "we want you back". So far they are out about $1800 of pure profit since I have not filed a claim since they dropped me. Not a huge amount of money, but it adds up.

27. Insurance Company
Obviously you are under the mistaken impression that insurance companies are in business to spread risk, so that an individual keeps from being destroyed by a disaster. They are in business to make money for shareholders, and their owners.
