$1.5 Million Spent On Anti-Gay Marriage Ad
A group called the National Organization for Marriage, which worked to overturn gay marriage in California, is out with a controversial new ad that suggests opponents of same-sex marriage are now being victimized for their beliefs.

"There's a storm gathering," one woman says as the spot opens. "The clouds are dark," Says another woman: "I am afraid."

Later in the spot, a man says same-sex marriage advocates "want to bring the issue into my life." He is followed by a woman who says "my freedom will be taken away."

More here

Why? Why does it matter to anyone who anybody marries? How does it affect me if two men or two women down the street get married? I just don't understand.

1. Facts and truth don't matter to bigots.
It really isn't much more complicated than that...

2. Because even though the Biblical God is one of extravegant abundance and generosity,
the version they worship is one of extreme scarcity and stinginess -

somehow they must believe that there is only a finite, and a very small finite, amount of God's love, God's grace, and God's mercy. And so, they must work as diligently as possible to make sure that none of that precious stuff goes to someone else, and they must try to hoard for themselves.

Somehow, in their psyche, it bothers them greatly that someone else might be just as loved by God as them, even if that other person is quite different.

Because if God can love someone who isn't me, and who has a very different lifestyle, ideology, philosophy, hobbies, interests, whatever, then that means that God has at least TWO acceptable types of people to love; and if we accept that, then we have to make room for three, then four, then for the entire 6 billion plus people who live on this planet. At that point, relativeness comes in, and, for them, God is somehow reduced.

There's a great book that came out a number of years ago called "Your God is Too Small" - which is a challenge precisely to those people who profess to believe in God Almighty as depicted in holy scripture, but who make that God into a small, petty, mean, powerless puppet.

3. That is an explanation
I have not heard before, probably because I usually try to avoid all discussions of religion :). I like it. This is an interesting angle you have presented and brings new information to use when dealing with the Talibornagins (only when I must).

Thanks Rabrrrrrr. I am going to have to look for that book. :hi:

4. A 'law professor' from Liberty University was on Diane Rheem this morning.
His argument that countries that earliest allowed gay marriage have records of declines in marriage -- an argument aptly refuted by the pro-gay-marriage guests on the program.

But his broader argument is that "traditional marriage" is being undermined and needs protection. A problem with these numbskulls is that their definition of "traditional marriage" is all wrong. They think of the nuclear family as reflecting traditional marriage -- the union of a man and a woman. In fact, traditional marriage was between two families, the creation of a new unit in a multi-generational household or of an offshoot that would produce a new multi-generational household. This was our heritage, not just that of much of the rest of the world. What destroyed it in developed countries, and further destroys nuclear families today, is economic development and related incentives that pull traditional families apart, sending members to disparate locations. In short, capitalist development destroys marriages of all types (and other community and interpersonal relationships of all types). Gay marriage has nothing to do with it, other than making marriage available to larger segments of the population, so expanding its reach through the population.

6. Bigots are beyond stupid. Really, it's a special kind of cognitive failure...

Later in the spot, a man says same-sex marriage advocates "want to bring the issue into my life." He is followed by a woman who says "my freedom will be taken away."

Anyone who can say such a thing (or nod earnestly in agreement) without seeing the outrageous irony, hypocrisy and contradiction here... can such a person truly be considered a mentally competent adult?

8. It's disgusting how many millions of dollars are going to fund efforts to insist
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 02:14 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
that bigotry continue to remain official policy in so many parts of our country. Just think how much 1.5 million dollars could help the poor and homeless and help improve the community in general? Instead, some of these so-called "Christian" organizations simply want to raise and spend millions and millions of dollars attempting to (re-)enshrine bigotry towards GLBTQ individuals wherever they are threatened with having to endure the prospect of full equality for all citizens in this country. Geez! :eyes:
