What political label fits me?
I am just curious how I would be labeled by others.

I want the environment protected. Strongly support 2nd amendment. Want business unionized, or something sort of like that. Absolutely support gay rights, and sexual freedom. In favor of govt encouraging organic foods. Want to make pot legal, and greatly scale back the war on drugs. Want the war in Iraq ended, and maybe Afghanistan. If we develop solar and other alternative fuels there won't be an overseas war anyway. Want industry in this country protected and encouraged. Want the education system overhauled and fixed, it's really messed up. I want education to be more affordable and more available.
That's all I can think of.

3. Probably a reasonable, liberal Democrat.
You sound a lot like me. I'm almost exactly the same in my beliefs. :hi:

4. What about tax policy?
What priority do you give enhanced government services vs. lower taxes and fewer services.

That to me is the central struggle for me politically.

I think that there are a lof of people who vote republican that would agree with you on many of those issues, but when the tax man comes knocking that ends the debate.

6. Wow, good point.
I guess I am in favor of higher taxes for the higher income brackets. I'm not sure if that is really saying much.

I really do think that if a person is willing to work hard, and take chances they should get to keep what they earn. But I also think that it actually does the economy more good for the working class to have more of the money because they don't tend to save it. They spend it. And that beneifts everybody more.

Good question. Not sure I have a real answer.

9. The recent debate about California's balanced budgets have really enlightened me
It made me start asking questions and, somewhat unfortunately, has pushed me a little farther to the center.

As I'm sure you've heard, California's budgets are totally out of whack. $40B deficit this year. A huge gap. Part of that is due to declining tax revenues as the top 1% in California pay 40% of the state's revenue. Since their income is largely taken from the stock market, as that fluctuates, so does my state's revenues. Also, since the price of homes has taken a nose dive revenue from property taxes has gone into the shitter as well. So the issue of "fairness" to higher income brackets doesn't really concern me, but the diversity of our income certainly does. Is it good fiscal policy to have so much weighted on so few? I'm not as sure as I used to be.

To cover up a $40B deficit there is going to have to be a mix of service cuts and revenue increases. This is going to be tough to solve because states can't borrow money and run deficts.

11. Holy shit. 1%, 40 % That isn't good.
I think the core problem is people feel they deserve too much shit. Instead of putting money in the bank, they get the new car on credit. Can't be happy without all the shiny new shit. I don't suppose that will change though.

13. that's kinda hard to believe too
it certainly is not true in my state, where income taxes are much flatter. California gets about half of its revenue from income taxes. Even if the top 1% paid 40% of the income taxes, which is still doubtful since their tax rates are not THAT progressive, that would not be 40% of all revenues. In places like Kansas and Louisiana at least, those making less than $40,000 are paying a higher percentage of their income in state taxes than those making over $200,000.

10. I guess
because I so frequently see wars between groups who choose to label themselves one thing against groups who choose to label themselves something else.
Not a big deal actually. I was just curious.

12. I have always felt
that when it says "libby's, libby's, libby's" on the label, label, label, then it's good, good, good on the table, table, table.

But I probably watch too much TV and always have.
