Chimpanzees exchange meat for sex

Share and share alike: a male chimp will give up his hard-earned catch for sex

Chimpanzees enter into "deals" whereby they exchange meat for sex, according to researchers.

Male chimps that are willing to share the proceeds of their hunting expeditions mate twice as often as their more selfish counterparts.

This is a long-term exchange, so males continue to share their catch with females when they are not fertile, copulating with them when they are.

/snip/

"By sharing, the males increase the number of times they mate, and the females increase their intake of calories," said Dr Gomes.

"What's amazing is that if a male shares with a particular female, he doubles the number of times he copulates with her, which is likely to increase the probability of fertilising that female."

1. I remember reading about this half a decade ago in a textbook even older than that.

2. Fortunately for women
we are not chimps and we earn our own meat.

3. But we still prefer the guys who are nice to us.
What you are not paying attention to is how this shoots down the whole ALPHA MALE construct: mighty hunter beats his chest, takes what he wants and the women grovel before him, hoping for his genes. Nuh uh, honey. A nice guy who grooms us, babysits the kids, and takes us out to dinner is gonna get laid while the towering hulk is still roaring what a big cheese he is.

6. I haven't a clue as to your point...
this study leads us to conclude that, in the chimp world, there is a tit for tat for a basic necessity for female chimps physical well-being. This dynamic sheds no illumination on a modern human heterosexual female's chances for survival.

11. Nice patriarchal filter you have in place there.
But only a well-indoctrinated patriarch defender would see that.

What I see is that B-list boys are giving offerings to females who then choose to favor them when they are in the mood. Survival FOR THE FEMALES really isn't the issue. The females know how to feed themselves just fine. The issue is survival of the male's genetic material which has a MUCH better chance if he feeds the female.

Or, as my sister says, "Always get the steak dinner first."

21. Survival for the females IS an issue...
The article states this:

"Meat is important for the animals' diet because it is so high in protein. Since female chimps do not usually hunt, "they have a hard time getting it on their own," explained Dr Gomes."

Your comments are right on

I was thinking that most know my posts on this board, so a sarcasm tag wasn't needed.

A nice guy who grooms us, babysits the kids, and takes us out to dinner is gonna get laid while the towering hulk is still roaring what a big cheese he is.

I concur, and

well said

4. The fire+meat+men thing does seem to be almost universal.
When I lived in Russia, the men always did the "shashlik" or BBQ.
When visiting Brazil, my cousin's father-in-law pridefully ruled over the churrasco while the younger men looked on with envy. All the women stayed away.
In Uzbekistan, my best friend's father's ONLY cooking role was to apply the fire to the meat (shashlik). Outside.

In my family, on Labor Day, July 4th, year after year....every one had to step aside while the "men" got to putting the meat on the fire. Outside.
On my Mexican side of the family, the women do tortillas, beans, tamales, salsas, etc. but the men get the grilling.
I guess the fire makes it dangerous enough to be "manly"?

13. Know anything about the Gobi mummies?
One of them was so gorgeous they put her on postage stamps. Know how she died, those many thousands of years ago? Build up of soot in her lungs from tending too many fires.

Women wised up. Men...burnt steak tasty.

5. Backyard bbq originated in San Francisco after the 1906 quake
according to Simon Winchester. He didn't have much to say about scoring after dinner. :)

14. And to think I am planning on buying a Weber grill this summer
because I assume that when it comes to cookouts, I am on my own.

I never dreamed that someday that could be equated with, well, buying something battery-operated out of one of "those" catalogs.
