Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 10:58 AM by n2doc
ESPN.com news services
Nick Adenhart, a rookie pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, died in a car crash early Thursday morning, just hours after pitching in a game in Anaheim.

A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN.com that Adenhart had been killed in a car accident.

Wednesday night, Adenhart had pitched six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits, striking out five and walking three in just his fourth major league start.

According to multiple reports out of the Los Angeles area, three people were killed in the three-car crash in Fullerton, Calif. One person was reported to be seriously injured.

According to the Los Angeles Times, witnesses told police that the driver of a red minivan blew through a red light and hit a Mitsubishi carrying four people.

The Times reported that the minivan's driver ran from the scene, but was arrested about a mile away.

Information from ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson and Jerry Crasnick and The Associated Press was used in this report.

4. What a shame. He had just reached the top of the world..
He had so much in front of him and now it's gone through no fault of his own.

There's little info about the crash like who else was killed and who the driver of the van was and why he fled.

5. He was only 22.
My brother in law was almost killed on his motorcycle after someone went through a red light. He was banged up bad but really, really lucky. Please, everyone, obey the traffic lights. Other people's lives depend on it.

6. 22 years old. I turned 22 in 1973, visiting a farm in Austria. How tragic.
His life was in front of him, and this is just so wrong. So was Bush's indiscriminate killing of our troops so he could play soldier in Iraq. But, that said, this too is murder. Sitting at a traffic light and a drunk slams into you and your friends. They had no chance. Adenhart was from Silver Spring, MD, where I now live. I don't understand these things, but from every account, he seemed like a great kid.

Very saddened to hear of this senseless tragedy.

7. Driver of van up on possible murder charges
"The suspect, identified as Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, will be booked on suspicion of felony hit and run, driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular manslaughter, and possibly murder, according to Fullerton police Lt. Kevin Hamilton.

Adenhart, who was a passenger in the car that was rammed by the minivan, died shortly after the crash at a nearby hospital.

Two other people in the car, including the driver, a 20-year-old woman who police said was believed to have gone dancing with Adenhart earlier in the evening, were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person from their car was hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver of a third automobile caught up in the collision between the first two was not seriously hurt, police said."
