Saint-Hyacinthe boasts the only unionized Wal-Mart store in North America with a contract after a Quebec arbitrator imposed one yesterday.Both Wal-Mart Canada Corp. and the United Food and Commercial Workers union are claiming victory after reading Alain Corriveau’s 46-page ruling.

Louis Bolduc, Quebec director of the UFCW, said his 180 Local 501 members in Saint-Hyacinthe are happy to “finally have a contract after four years.”Their store was certified in January 2005 and binding arbitration began at the end of 2006. Bolduc said the union won such benefits as health and safety advantages and yearend bonuses.

Will WalMart close the store ? I don"t think so, not this time. I think WallMart will look at this as a pilot project.
