Job seekers overwhelm NH job fair -- fair had to be closed
Things are getting better -- haven't you heard?

http://www.boston.com/news/local/new_hampshire/articles/2009/04/09/mass_turnout_for_big_job_fair_in_manchester_nh/

MANCHESTER, N.H.—More than 10,000 people showed up Thursday for a big job fair in Manchester, N.H., backing up traffic for miles and quickly filling up a mall parking lot that served as a shuttle-bus pickup hub.

The event was closed to throngs of job-seekers several hours into the event and the 3,000-car parking lot at the Mall of New Hampshire had no more room.

The job fair sponsored by WMUR, the state of New Hampshire and Southern New Hampshire University had anticipated 5,000 participants.

The job fair had been heavily promoted on TV. Officials said 1,300 people, many of them dressed in business suits, entered the job fair within the first hour. The event was supposed to run until 3 p.m. at SNHU's athletic complex.

1. We had a job fair here a month or so ago...
Over 6,000 people showed up and they had to start turning people away.

Yep, times are good. :sarcasm:

2. I'm taking a class at a local college 50 miles west of Chicago
and it was hosting a job fair today. I was shocked to discover that there was a line at least a mile long to get into the parking lots today (usually there's no one in front of me as I pull in). Parking? What parking? My usual place is about 500 yards from the front door of my building.

Today?

I parked on the highway, hiked across the muddy grass (thank god I was in my jeans and sneakers unlike the men and women in suits and high heels) and arrived to my class 30 minutes late. Police cars from the neighboring counties were arriving to help with the parking and facilitate traffic flow as I was leaving an hour later, it had only gotten more congested.

It was incredible. I've never seen anything like this.

4. I'm beginning to think that job fairs are little more than a cruel joke.

HR folks attending these functions often admit they're not hiring. They're there simply to keep the corporate name and logo in front of the public.
