My gym isnt some private business. Its the gym at the University of Wisconsin, a public school. We shouldnt close down our buildings for Easter, and especially not for the day before Easter. I mean I can see their argument for closing down on Friday and Sunday, though I still think that argument is BS. But why Saturday?

7. Its not the issue of not having anywhere to workout. It's really the closing of services for Easter
They dont do this for every single religious holiday, except Christmas which is a Federally recognized holiday.

5. Maybe because a large portion of people celebrate the holiday
And spend the weekend with family instead of wanting to be at work.

It is not endorsing religion, it is accepting the fact that folks tend to want to get away during certain days, en masse, and would probably call off anyway :)

36. EXACTLY.
At my college, Easter was struck from the holiday list many years ago because of concerns over religious equality, and was replaced with a floating "Spring Day" holiday that employees could take whenever they wanted.

You know what happened? They all took the Friday before easter off, so the campus is closed anyway. There aren't enough staff to run the place.

26. So the staff at UW should never get a day off for holidays? Because it inconveniences you?
My husband, who teaches at the local college, just had a week off (3-30 to 4-3) called "Spring Break." Woo-hoo, a whole week. How's them apples?

Back in the day it was called "Easter break" and was co-ordinated with the actual Christian holy days of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. If you haven't looked at your calendar yet, I can tell you that these days whenever Spring Break coincides with Easter it's an accident. As it happens, last night was the first night of Passover, which also doesn't coincide with Spring Break, not that it ever did.

But you know what? Every so often public employees deserve some time off, just like the rest of the population.

And you know what else? Here in California a lot of public employees are having to take mandated unpaid furloughs because of the budget crisis. That means if you show up on the wrong day at the DMV to take a driver's license test or at Public Works to pull some permits for construction, you will be SOL staring at a sign on the door in two languages advising you to come back some other time.

I was once in that situation myself: I worked for UC and for a couple of years in order to save money they shut the entire campus system down over the week between Christmas and New Year. Everyone but those working in the Vivarium and other live animal labs had to go home and take the time out of their accrued vacation or simply have their paycheck docked. The reasoning was that the faculty and students weren't there anyway, so all us secretaries and groundskeepers could help the UC system balance their budget by having our already low salaries docked a few days.

Sorry, MadBadger, but you pushed a button of mine. Hope you can find someplace else to exercise for a couple of days.

Hekate

28. Yes, but I wish they wouldn't tie it to religious holidays.
I have tomorrow off, but I'd gladly give that up to get the religious label *off* my day off.

I'm all for giving individuals religious holidays off; I just don't like it institutionalized.

29. The gym at the University where I work has all kinds of weird hours too.
I don't work for the University but our office is on campus and we can use the facilities for a really low fee. But they had really weird hours. Between semesters they were only open 8-5 M-F (I work 8-5) for like 2 weeks at Christmas. And similar hours between other semesters. I just found a gym that costs $10 a month and is open 24 hours during the week and until 10 pm on weekends.

They probably are staffed by students who go home during Easter weekend. So they wouldn't have enough staff to stay open. It probably has nothing to do with the holiday really; just that they would be very understaffed.

45. Toronto's just as bad from Good Friday to the following Tuesday.
Half the city shuts down for days and the trains don't even run (at least not early) on Easter morning. I didn't realize that until I found myself in town on those days. The stores closed and it was like murder finding an open restaurant. Pretty much everything not associated with a hotel was locked down tight.

37. If you are scheduled to be off during that time, go to your place of
work at your normal time and toil in protest.

Or, hop on a bicycle, or run, or do pushups and situps - all in the fresh outdoors, and commune with nature. Whilst there consider all the miserable people who must work or who don't have any work at all.

Or, spend some quality time with the family, and whilst there, consider all the miserable people who cannot.

Sheesh

40. Businesses and government close on religious holidays because of the number of people
who do not want to work them or people do not use their services to the point to justify being open. If they have found in the past that it is difficult to schedule workers or that there were not enough people using a service for the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter then they made a decision to close for that day.
