Bachus says there's 17 'socialists' in House

Rep. Spencer Bachus, the top Republican on the Financial Services Committee, told a hometown crowd in Alabama today he believes there are several socialists in the House.

Actually, he says there are exactly 17 socialists in the House of Representatives. according to the Birmingham News:

But he said he is worried that he is being steered too far by the Congress: "Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists."

Asked to clarify his comments after the breakfast speech at the Trussville Civic Center, Bachus said 17 members of the U.S. House are socialists.

Searching the POLITICO style book and the official U.S. House listings, we don't see a category for socialists -- just a lot of Ds and Rs next to lawmaker names. And Bachus didn't name names of the socialist 17.

4. Spencer Bachus said that????
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 06:38 PM by Mike 03
Jeeeze, a few weeks ago I actually told my mother that there were a couple of Republicans I liked and named him as one because of his decency on one of the finance or banking committees.

Fucking amazing... I had no clue he could ever say something this fucking stupid.

I'm ashamed I liked the guy.

With great sadness, I thank you. It's better to know the truth.

8. hardly. even the so-called socialists still accept capitalism.
at the best a bunch of weak fabians willing to wait until the sun dies out before starting a real revolution. hell the sun will die out before even half-socialist ideas like single payer healthcare even see the light of day in this country.

14. Polls suggest 20% of Americans
would favor a socialist system over the one we have. That means there really ought to be 87 Socialists in the House, and 20 in the Senate.

18. I didn't think there were ANY Socialists in the House?
At least not since Bernie went to the Senate.

We could use about 100 more though. Combined with 335 Democrats (not DLC or BlueBalls) and that would be about the proper balance for the House.

20. I have to admit, my first thought went to the scene from The Manchurian Candidate...
the original one, where the dumber than dirt Senator keeps giving different numbers of communists in the government, lol.

21. All you have to do is substitute "communists" for "socialists" and
we jump back magically in the Wayback Machine to the 1950's and McCarthyism.

And if you substitute "witches" for "socialists", we are transported back to Europe during the Inquisition.

Some things never change.
