The only way the FCC does anything in the case of an outrageous broadcast is when they receive hundreds of complaints. Otherwise, they don't care. The Religious Right knows this well. That's why they command their followers to flood the FCC with letters of complaint every time something contrary to their taste is broadcast. Remember the overblown outrage at Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"? Same thing.

Glenn Beck, with the support of Fox News, has been amping an increasingly deranged and potentially dangerous rhetoric of hate, fear-mongering and paranoia, resorting to all sorts of veiled (and less veiled) calls for "action" against those who Beck perceives as the enemy. Every week his paranoid rantings increase in tone, and many fear some lunatics among his audience may take him seriously, with potentially dangerous consequences. As it has been reported by the press, last week a fringe right-winger who followed Glenn Beck's show went on a rampage killing three police officers in Pennsylvania.

What's worst, Rupert Murdoch and Fox News, far from stopping the lunacy, seem to be giving Glenn Beck the thumbs-up sign to his dangerous blabbering.

The FCC certainly has jurisdiction over what's broadcast over basic cable, and this includes Fox News.

Cable companies work their own deals on what they carry...the FCC has no jurisdiction. The "ownership" of cable belongs to the local franchise holder...usually your municipality. The FCC has zero jurisdiction over the content of what is put over a cable system...that is the responsibility of the franchise holder. You can try to have the franchise revoked...and good luck at that.

Freedom of speech is a real pisser. You start banning content and you get on a slippery slope. Who determines what is fair? With the large number of cable channels out there the consumer is the ultimate censor. Either they buy the propaganda or they don't. And if you try to shut it off one way, it will manifest itself another.

Access is the answer...breaking up the large corporate control of the media systems...localize it in ownership and program control. That's how it was designed.

They also have jurisdiction over programming inappropriate material during children's hours.

27. Support Ala Carte Legislation

Sure, you can complain and your letter will be filed circularly. I can't recall any cable channel that has ever been fined yet lost its charters and franchises for content...especially political. Best of Luck.

While I find Faux repugnant, stupid isn't necessarily inappropriate.

I'm more offended that I have to pay to subsidize that network so I can view channels I care to see. If you want to push for a change, I'd strongly suggest supporting the "Ala Carte" legislation that has long been fought by the corporates. It would enable the subscriber to pick and chose which channels they want and will pay for.

If Faux is that offensive, most cable boxes will allow you to block them out. No one forces people to watch stupid. Stupid is as stupid does.

11. the second sickest thing about this footage

(the first being Beck's actions) is the poor sucker being doused. He is clearly in physical distress - and it increases each time Beck starts pouring it on again. But he doesn't do anything except try to wipe the liquid (cold water? I hope, rather than gasoline) out of his face. The subservience and willingness to take humiliation with no reaction was almost as disturbing as Beck's actions.

But I can't blame him for the murderer in Pittsburgh. Nothing links the murderer and Glenn Beck. The murderer was even further out on the fringe, out in Nazi land.

I also don't think trying to have the government censor programs like Beck's is the way to go. I think it is wiser to bring them to the attention of decent rational people. Media Matters is doing a great job of tracking the right wing. The message must get to those who are unaware of what is going on.
